Keep him around as the 7-8 guy (I think he's 8) but he's not in the six.
Stone gets too much love for his slapshot, but it isn't accurate and he just blasts away doesn't matter if guys are open or if its in traffic. I think because of his shot people overlook his poor defensive play, first pass, and instincts.

Only thing holding Mackey out in the top 6 is that he is a left shot and will have to play his offside, and Meloche shoots right so the pairing with Zadorov has them on their proper side.

No question that Mackey has passed both he and Stone. I would expect that Mackey starts the season in the lineup, with Stone as the #7

I love Valimaki, I am one of his biggest supporter. But since his injuries he just not the same, before he was full of confidence and he knew what to do when someone come at him, it's almost like he was thinking 3 steps ahead in a chess game. But last night, he's like whenever a forechecking on him, he panic, doesn't what to do and either blindly getting rid of the puck or just plain lose the puck or the forechecker. On that Oilers shorty, he tried to go behind the net with the puck but lost it to Yamamoto and immediately panic and didn't know what to do and allow Yamamot so much time to pass it to Drai. I pains me greatly to see a once upon a time promising Dman turned into that because of injuries.

It seems like more of a confidence issue with Valimaki than anything. When he came back from injury in 2020-21, he lit up the Finnish league and showed a little bit of progress under Ward.

He didn't start spiraling until Darryl took over in the latter part of the 2020-21 season. Then Mitch Love also gave Valimaki zero rope/leniency last year.

The ability is still there. He probably just needs a fresh start or a coach that he jives with better

My take. He’s completely lost his confidence.

He’s a perfect candidate for a fresh start somewhere else. I think it will happen sooner or later.

Why? It makes sense to go to the maximum time to see who can push through. And the closer you get to opening day, the more the players might get lost in the crowd and make it through.

Fair point, but I would think a few players who are waiver eligible and not at risk of getting picked might get waived to reduce the bloat in training camp.

15 players did go on waivers today. No one notable. Two players familiar to Flames - Byron Froese and Louis Domingue

Sorry should have specified Flames players specifically.

However, if you waive them all in one batch, the players not at risk act as camouflage for those that other teams might look at.

As for the bloat in training camp, you're going to relieve that by sending guys from Calgary to… Calgary? Cutting them from the roster doesn't really remove them from the facilities.

Do we know if the Wranglers are training out of the same facilities though? There were already 11 players assigned to the Wranglers I believe, so you do already need a training camp running for them. I’m not saying they should have cut more players, just surprised they haven’t.

Wranglers will be training at Winsport and will have their own little bubble according to Treliving.

Pretty sure Flames won’t be practicing with their AHL club all season long.

Groups 1, 2, and 3 weren't practising together in training camp, either. But there are only so many facilities in the city to accommodate them. Having a particular guy on the AHL roster instead of the NHL roster during camp isn't going to change that.

Who's in, who's on the fringe? I wrote a little more about the big picture here. Fire away with any questions. I have many more thoughts that just don't fit in a shorter form article right now.

I’m not sold as eakin as a 3rd liner. Also valamaki needs a change of scenery.

Mackey and Meloche I think are the frontrunners for the last spot.

One is a left handed shot, one is a righty. Both play the same, stay-at-home game. Meloche may have the edge physically.

At this point it wouldn't surprise me if the Flames waive Valimaki and he remains unclaimed. Would prefer a trade but those salary dollars are an asset as well.

I could see a handful of teams putting a claim in - including Oilers.
