It comes down to this - do we want the player for 8 years, or do we want that extra 500k in cap space.
Pay him. We’re all in, and the cap is going up. 8x7 for Weegar is a better proposition than any of the contracts the Senators have signed this summer.

You say this for every negotiation.
If you give 20 guys an extra $250k, that's $5M off the cap that you could have used for another top player

I doubt anyone is suggesting this for all 20 players. Top paid guys only.
For Weegar though if the rumours are true that extra 250k is easily worth it

You overpay your top guys only
I think so far Treliving has done a decent jobs on that

I say it for every negotiation with a star.
I have no problem giving good players their money.
I have a problem giving Meh players too much.
The cap is projecting to rise $5M in the next two years and $10M in the next three. By the end of Weegar’s deal, it’ll be pushing $100M or more.
If you think he’s that good, pay him. 1st pairing D who play all situations and have an offensive game are a bargain at $7M.
Anyone else that we could sign to fill that role is likely to be just as expensive on the AAV, plus whatever assets are needed to bring them into the fold.
So just pay the guy you already have, who has shown a willingness to be here, and whose signing makes the Tkachuk trade the biggest grand slam victory of 21st century hockey.
8x$6.9M.

There is always a wait to a deadline. And if there’s no deadline you make one up.
If they are genuinely close they will figure it out. Weegar has the leverage so Tre probably gives. But there’s no reason for him to do it today.

Well, no. We don't know what it "comes down to" at this point. We don't know where either party is, nor what the actual numbers look like.

It might not even be the actual money being offered, a lot of deals have involved significant signing bonuses and we just signed two deals like that. That might be the hold up trying to spread it out so its more palatable to the owners.

What rumours?
I have seen a lot of speculation about where the parties are, what the numbers look like and what Weegar's intentions are in this negotiation, but nothing that even rises to the characterisation of actual "rumours."

I’m less afraid of term on Weegar than Huby. Games played by Weegar is low for a guy at his age.

I wouldn’t worry about either. Huberdeau’s game should be elite until at least 36, and even when it declines, his vision is too good for him to be less than a 50 point player.
Plus he spent three years with Jagr. I’m sure he’s got a better book than most how to extend your career into your late 30s.

I wouldn't be so quick to suggest elite until 36. I can see him being elite for the next 3 or 4 seasons for sure. But after 34 there's been star players that start to lose it quick and star players that keep producing at high levels.
Huberdeau strikes me as a player that will be useful and smart into his mid thirties and beyond for sure, but to me the word elite is not something I toss as an assurance on any player that many years out and that old. Just too hard to tell. Elite is very difficult to keep up when you're playing amongst a bunch of stars that are now 15 years younger than you.

I can’t remember who the second reporter was, but Elliotte Friedman reported he thought the parties were close to the Hampus Lindholm contract. That’s 8 * 6.5.
I can’t remember the exact wording Friedman used either, but it was on a recent 32 Thoughts Podcast.

Can't believe this is dragging on with how positive the talk was 2 weeks ago.

I think it’s probably a matter of Weegar wanting some soak time and his agent knowing the Flames recent history with UFAs and trying to apply pressure.

Not me, based on the purposeful public comments by both sides last week I looked at that and believed that a contract will 100% get done before the start of the season but that both sides will use the remaining training camp/pre season to apply pressure over the final hundreds of thousands of dollars.
This will be done in the next week or so.

The worst case scenario that I see is if Weegar's side plays complete hardball and states "sorry Brad, we couldn't get there and my client will not be negotiating until the off season now".
In which case I'm fully confident Brad would cave and suck up the $200k a year or whatever the gap is and just sign him so as to not lose a star asset after one season. In fact, based on rumoured amounts I wouldn't be surprised if Brad is already comfortable with Weegars ask and would be happy to sign it but is just squeezing as much as he can.

With the rumors of the cap going up significantly I hope we can lock him in pronto.

The cap is going up only $1 million next season. Then probably $4 million a season for the next couple of seasons. They can't afford to overpay by much.

I can believe it. Inexperienced uncle lawyer agent guy negotiating. Always hard to negotiate versus inexperience.
