Winger depth is the easiest to do without so there will be teams that have a top six winger with controllable term that would swap him for Weegar.
Take the controllable asset that will help now and in the long term rather than just losing an asset for nothing.

Once teams see what they have at the end of camp there will be a push to shuffle and fill holes. If Weegar is not signed by then he should be traded to a team that needs defensive help and can afford to give up quality on the wing.

Yeah, if that’s an option of course you would do that. The premise I’m arguing against is that if Weegar is not willing to sign you must trade him for something so he doesn’t walk for nothing… I made it pretty clear we’re in win now mode, so of course I’d want the team to trade Weegar (if he won’t sign) for an asset that helps us win now.

Weegar is good enough for teams to do that but my guess is he has to agree to an extension for the Flames to get full value
No we can’t since otherwise we would have not had to give Montreal a first round pick. Flames have like one million or a bit more free so no they can’t take salary.

I think that's been the plan all along. Turn him into a different defenseman, or a RW that fills that hole, and anything else you can scare up is a bonus that can be used at the deadline.

Weegar would be a rental. Teams trading for rentals are going for it, just like Calgary, and they don’t trade away RW help. They trade picks and prospects.

To me this whole thing about not talking contract during the season is ridiculous. That's why you have an agent and him and the gm can work on the deal during the season and the player just plays hockey. It is so ridiculous that they would waste the whole season not negotiating. Then you have what happened with Gaudreau. For those that let Tre off on that one he should have never let it get to that point and there is always something the GM could have done differently.

JUST SIGN HIM GOD DAMNIT. You know damn well if you don't then we're gonna be in a decent position in the standings, we're not gonna trade away a key piece.
Then he's gonna go UFA after a season under Sutter and either be outpriced, outbid, or he's just gonna dip.
I refuse to believe Tree might let another great player walk, especially over 250k-1m.

Funny thing is- we shouldn’t even HAVE Weegar. Getting Huberdeau was a fleecing, but having a top-2 defenseman thrown into the deal was highway robbery. If you go by the predicted parameters of a Tkachuk trade before the fact, we should have expected a roster player, prospect, and a first.

But now that we have Weegar, we should be doing everything we can to keep him, or turn him into a player that can help us (now and long-term).

We had one of the best defense corps in the league last year (at least in the regular season), and we would have gone into this season with the same group, sans Gudbranson. Weegar just by himself could get us a huge haul- including a roster player (or players) that would help us now.

If Zito was smart, he would have won the Tkachuk sweepstakes by a mile with a pkg of Huby, Schwindt, and a first- then trade Weegar for a few assets (assuming they traded him because they figured they wouldn’t be able to fit his new deal into their salary structure).

People need to explain like Gio said above why teams who are trying to win now are going to give established or up and coming young players for a rental. They’re going to want to trade us future prospects or picks because I assume like the Flames they want to win. It really makes little sense for a team with good players to trade them to us for rentals when they could get someone else for just picks.

I don’t think it was if your goal is winning a cup and not just a good regular season.

Guess the Flames would have to say yes to it?

You can just tell from that offer that Tre had Zito outbidding himself for Tkachuk.

If weegar doesn't sign before puck drop game 1. That's fine. Milk him for a cup run. Might as well get used to having players with great trade value leave and get nothing back. Doesn't seem to bother tree any. Be like tree. Grow a beard and wear a pointy hat and walk with a stick.

No one has yet to provide a legit trade partner to fill the top line RW? You can cross out any contenders you are getting picks prospects and depth players. So what teams in the middle or rebuilding are ready to give up a roster player for Weegar now?

Don’t you know how to do it? I thought you just go to the trade screen and fill number of players on your side so you can get that guy you want. Then just press the button and instant trade. Works every time.

Given that you’re looking for a top six winger with term I would guess the number of contenders giving one of those for a rental is well nil. Maybe you can arrange a sign and trade? Trey did it once I guess maybe he can again but that’s about the only way you’re getting a signed too six winger.

There’s plenty of teams that would pay big for a guy like Weegar. Look at a team like Washington- they don’t have a lot after Carlson on their back end. I could see Jersey, Pittsburgh, and NYR just off the top of my head. Boston could use him too- Hampus Lindholm is a great two-way guy, but will never put up the kind of points Weegs can.

Same thing goes for Hanifin.

Yes and every single one of those teams would give you picks/prospects. Give me a top 6 winger with term off any of those teams that they’d trade Calgary for a rental. No one is saying Calgary can’t get futures for Weegar. But we don’t want futures we want a top six winger signed for say 2 years who would fit cap wise in the Weegar gap.

Breaking News!

Weegar keen on contract extension talks before season begins.

Well... I feel better now hearing that.
