I’m going to alternate cheering and booing. In 13s intervals.

This isn't the average UFA that went elsewhere story I totally see why so many are pissed at him.

Tavares also left at the 11th hour for a bottom feeder.

I seriously hope this thread doesn't last the year let alone get bumped at year 7.

From a first place team to a bottom feeder? don't think so

Semantics. Minor details can be skipped when insulting the Leafs, Canucks and Oilers.

And players can do no wrong in some people's eyes
He plays a kid's game for millions of dollars...we can boo him for handling his departure like a jackass
It will be fun, should make an otherwise boring game more interesting

Re-read your post and I see you weren't actually making the baseless claim that Johnny reneged. My bad.
As for the offers, no argument the Flames offered the most. The challenge is that the $84M deal was never actually on the table at the same time as the other offers. Many speculated that Johnny's camp would know exactly which teams were interested and what their offers would be long before the deadline...but that seems unlikely considering how it all played out.
If he could do it over again with access to all of the information, maybe he would take the $84M. But he never turned that amount down to sign the deal he did with CBJ - he turned down $84M to take on risk/uncertainty that he could find a deal that better suited his priorities (which may have included hoping for a higher AAV). That was the decision.
It probably didn't go as he hoped, but once the $84M was off the table it became completely irrelevant.

Not too mention the TV commercial with him in his childhood bed, dreaming of playing for Toronto Maple Leafs. That really crossed some strange lines.

Am I the only one that will be cheering Gaudreau, not because of all he did during his time here but because he chose to leave and not handcuff us with that 8 year deal?

It has been reported by people close to the team they made they counter offer and the Flames agreed. He also said he tried to come back on a 7 year deal but once he burned those bridges I don't think he could come back.

Yeah like the line which enables John Tavares to live rent free in the head of everyone infatuated with Toronto.

Possibly, but I was following things quite closely in those key days and I only ever saw one tangible rumour - a post here on CP - that FWIW I don't disbelieve, but it was clearly one side of a story that had gone through an unknown number of distortions (people) from the direct participant to the post here.
It was fascinating to watch rumour spin to fact without any more corroborating evidence...just lots of news tidbits that could fit multiple scenarios, including this particular narrative. And disregarding other reporting that contradicts the notions of radio silence or that it was as simple as 'JG: demands! --> BT: deal!' - which is how many posters characterize it.
Nobody can tell me how they know or where they heard it, but everyone knows it for sure!

He said he thought about coming back on a 7 year deal but he didn't say he tried.

For what it’s worth, I didn’t know for sure what I wanted to do up until the last hours of the last day. Man, even after I turned down the eight-year deal from Calgary, I still thought about going back and trying to work on a seven-year deal to stay. It was all on the table for the entire process. Maybe that seems messy … but life is messy, you know?

I’m on the boo Johnny train. The Flames drafted him, gave him his opportunities, offered him a huge contract, and he left. Bottom line is he didn’t want to play here. Why would I cheer for the guy? Boos all day.

-Coleman was with Johnny Gaudreau before free agency hit and confirmed how close the star was to coming back to Calgary.
“I was with him a few days before free agency at [Sean Monahan]’s wedding and even at that point, he was still freaking out, didn’t really know what he wanted to do,” he said. “I think that truly was a gametime, down-to-the-wire decision.”
