Hmm, hadn't really considered it but Gaudreau going down to CBJ might be the best thing to happen for Philips' career. Big club woulda been pretty small with both of them getting minutes, but now there's an opening for a small winger (plus we've got size down the middle with Kadri).

I’d be so damn excited to see Phillips grab the spot and earn an every day role with the big club. Hard not to cheer for that guy.

Maybe I am a hater, but I would temper expectations with respect to Phillips. His AHL numbers are fairly pedestrian for what he brings away from the puck. Of course, it is possible that he has improved his game. But all things being equal, he is not going to come in and become the next Gaudreau/Paul Byron ect. He is most likely to be the next Czarnik.

That said, all the power to him, I hope he comes out swinging and makes his spot on the team a no brainer.

I think the biggest thing today is Sutter rewarding a young player for a solid preseason game.

It's early times, and we've certainly seen young players look good in the first half of the preseason compared to the second half ... but it certainly sends the right message to reward a guy for a great game.

That and they legitimately have a hole to fill and it's good to see their not close minded in how to fill it.

Thank you sir. I was hoping there may be some showing of some cards, but doesn't sound that way. With Gaudreau out of the way this is Phillips' opportunity to make something happen. The team can survive with one midget, but not two. Klapka has turned into a bit of a surprise. If he can show some finish in a game, he could surprise. Interesting to watch this playout, but I would think even as a PTO that Milano would have an edge because of his proven ability. Looking forward to the cuts that get us down to 15 forwards.

Phillips posseses a little more jam( intensity)in his game than That JG guy who used to play here.

Wow what an incredible opportunity for him to prove allot of people wrong and allot of people right.

Great write ups Scorp

Klapka was really impressive during the scrimmage.

Also, re: Phillips' AHL numbers being pedestrian ... he was the top-scoring U24 player in the league last season. All the guys ahead of him were in their late 20s, whereas he was 23 throughout the regular season and turned 24 at the start of the playoffs. What's been pedestrian have been his showings in past camps. He's never been able to distance himself from the pack in the slightest.

Phillips has to reach a minimum games played threshold this season otherwise he will become a UFA yes? And if I recall that minimum games is pretty high?
So chances are he's a free agent after this season. Not that it should dictate if he makes the team or not.

Yes. If he doesn't play 79 NHL games this season, he'll be eligible to become a Group 6 UFA next July.

TIL that Phillips is from Calgary. Kind of embarrassed I didn't know that.

Is almost PPG in the AHL over the last three seasons pedestrian? I find that an interesting comment. The AHL is no joke, especially as a young, small player. 9th in league scoring last year.

With Gaudreau leaving and a RW spot open he might feel like he truly has a shot and find another gear. Pencil me into the Phillips camp.

We need an NHL94 line of Klapka - Kadri - Phillips

It is interesting that when Mangiapane is healthy enough to go, Milano doesn't get that spot.

"His AHL numbers are fairly pedestrian for what he brings away from the puck."

Is what I said. If Phillips was a PK beast, or a power forward than his numbers would be excellent. That said, Phillips, from what I can tell is an offensive specialist. With that in mind his AHL numbers are fine, and should give him a decent shot at a roster spot. But there are a few things to keep in mind, Phillips played on a power house team where he was older than most of his peers, Phillips is a career minus in the AHL, and AHL success and NHL Success are not 1 to 1.

Far be it from me to predict he wont make the team, I just think the Gaudreau comparisons are crazy. I think the Czarnik comparable is fair. Czarnik at 24 had the almost exact same stat line as Phillips in the AHL before being traded to the Flames.

I see both PTOs are flanking Zary today. I think this camp has shown with abundant clarity that the Flames see Zary as a centre, and they are grooming him there.

I agree, the Gaudreau comparisons have no reasonable basis. That's setting him up to fail entirely.

I don't see why he couldn't be a Paul Byron, though.

Paul Byron was a PK specialist and checking forward no? or am I miss remembering?

Edit: no I remembered correctly in 521 games he has 824.3 pk/toi
