Love that Sutter is so even-keel.
It's about how it works, not who it is. I like that mentality -- it's about who works best together.
Also appreciate his very balanced correction of the Pelletier commentary that could've been misinterpreted. You get the sense that Darryl has no intention of pushing AHL guys into spots they aren't ready for; likely means the bar to make that leap and not be 'rushed' is pretty damn high in his eyes.
I think the team is intent to sign one of Milano or Eakin and playing them with Kadri is just to give them both a chance to show what they can do playing with a good center. I don't suspect either are expected to be in the top 6. Kadri is a known commodity and has nothing to really prove in camp, so it shouldn't affect him.

So Darryl says that top 6 role "isn't open" once everyone is back.
So who is assumed to be the person that takes it?
5 sure things: Hubs, Kadri, Elias, Eatbread, Toffoli.
Who is the assumed #6? Coleman?
First of all the question was about a 2nd line RW. I don't think that Sutter sees it as a top 6, rather a top 9. That way you clearly have 9 forwards that fit the top 9 - Huberdeau, Lindholm, Toffoli, Mangiapane, Kadri, Milano, Dube, Coleman, Backlund.
Sutter goes on to say that there isn't much difference between the 2,3,4 lines. Sutter continues that thought that players are going to play with whoever is going that night, so I think it's more pairs with interchangeable parts, rather than a 2nd line RW.
Finally, I think it's a way to light a fire under players. Have lines competing for which is the 1st and 2nd line each night. Meanwhile, have younger players working even harder for a spot that's not open, but they want.
Is this his message to Dube? Maybe he expects and wants it to be Dube, but is trying to get him to plow through a wall to get it.

That’s not how it came across because he continued by saying that he thought Dube played better on the left side. I think Sutter sees him as a LW that can sub in at center in case of an injury.

Sutter with some heady praise...well Sutter style observationwhich in normal speak is heady praise about Dustin Wolf. Cool to hear he's on Sutters radar. That says a lot to me.

If he stays healthy, yup. Hubeys got some cannons to feed on that line .
I predict their style will be clinical decimation of their opposition. Like nothing we've seen before.
Like, I feel like Lindy was playing g with talented kids last year but they're kids. These guys, just as good but serious men with a serious objective. I can't shake the belief that this is what Lindholm was built for. Guys of Huberdeau and Toffolis talents.

I am looking forward to Sunday and yet I am also not. All of us out of market Flames fans know we are going to get regionally locked out of watching preseason games and won't be able to watch it. Happens every year. Why doesn't CI or SN package carry them? Just frustrating.

Scrimmage tomorrow between some mixed groups, sure wish the Flames would pay a few ushers and some security to let the fans watch.... I mean we already fork over 10's of thousands for season tickets... its a shame they cant allow it.
Over the years seeing Sutter as a coach, he is very tough on younger players trying to make the team. This is not a criticism… it’s just how he likes to build his team. Older vets always have a much longer leash than young guys. This can be said of lots of coaches in the NHL but even more so with Sutter. It’s fine with a team trying to contend (like the flames are) but it would be frustrating with a younger team trying to rebuild.
Virtually every first overall pick makes their prospective NHL team right out of training camp… I honestly believe Sutter is likely the only coach in the league that would not do that. He’s just really tough with young players. In the long run, it can be good for the development of young players. But it would be tough sometimes as fans that want to see young guys make the team over older vets.
I’m assuming you meant first round and I am pretty sure that isn’t true. Most either go back to Jr or stay in college or overseas. No idea the % but I would bet less than half do in the first year and a few more do in the second.
If you meant first overall, I’m not sure that’s relevant.
So Sutter says the top 6 RW spot is not up for grabs when everyone is healthy and it's obvious to them.
Mind games with the group of several players that are competing for that spot? I don't see a clear odds favourite between Milano, Coleman, Dube, Pelletier or someone else.
Oh god it's Ritchie isn't it.

It is a real shame. It needs to change immediately.
