- Signing bonuses are a lump sum payment on July 1. Salary is paid twice monthly from the start to end of the regular season. Might as well get as much up front as you can.
- If the contract is bought out, the player still receives all signing bonuses in full, so it effectively makes the contract buyout proof (see Lucic, Milan).
Contrary to what some people say (including some media members), signing bonuses are still subject to escrow withholding, so it's not to avoid paying escrow.

A minor factor, but a helpful one, is that signing bonuses are paid in the team's home jurisdiction, and aren't subject to the jock taxes that pro athletes get dinged with when they go on road trips. If I understand correctly, only the prorated share of the player's base salary is taxable by the road jurisdiction.
A quick check tells me that Colorado has a flat-rate state income tax of 4.63%. It's not as good as being in a jurisdiction with no state income tax, but it's one of the better deals out there. Better to pay that tax at home than to pay a higher rate for every game in California, New York, etc.

Only 36 when it ends as well. I think he still has good hockey in him at that age.
Great deal for the Avs.

GMs offer it to players because it's more enticing.

I mean a poor person might want it spread out so they don’t risk spending too much and not being able to afford groceries so not exactly a fair comparison.

|
Well I would assume he wants to be at least the same percentage of the cap as last time, maybe more now that he has added the epic leadership chant of "Let's Go" to his skillset. That would mean he is likely nearing 15 million. The more entertaining one is Draisaitl, as according to the oilers and their fans he is second to only McDavid, meaning he will want more the MacKinnon or Matthews (and we know the leafs will overpay there), which means probably a 5 million increase in cap or more.

He wasn't going to sign for $10.5M - maybe good job for keeping it under $13M? It will be interesting to see how the franchise navigates the next few seasons with a lot of high dollar deals on the books and Rantanen coming up again soon.
|
Um, what?
Nate NacKinnon is arguably the second best player on the planet, and will probably be the highest paid NHL player for only two years. This deal may be market value today, but with an expected cap increase next year, by the time it actually starts it will probably already be a bargain, and will only get better through the first half of it.

Winners should get sprinkles. NM is a winner.
McDavid got his deal and hasn't won a damn thing. Which contract is better value. I think we know.

I think it’ll be a 7 year, 100m deal in AZ. Another “significant” 100m deal. Which will make McDavid get 15+ per year.

So, if he'd had asked for $14M you would have let him walk?
it was never going to be less than this. Never. And it likely was not a negotiation, McKinnon probably told them this is what he wants, and was not what he could have gotten.

I know most people think this deal is worth every penny... but, I think it makes Colorado hard up to surround him with the best talent to help him win. It takes a team including lower support plays down the lineup, and I'm shocked that players like him don't follow Crosby's lead and take a loyalty discounts - after all, he does get Tim Horton's money plus others in marketing contracts. One of the reasons Colorado won was because they had great support pieces, once this contract starts, they'll have to reduce cap somewhere, MacKinnon's lower cap hit was why they could sign so many great players. I don't think he shouldn't get the money... just that a 10 million dollar cap hit would given them more options.
In Edmonton... I was also shocked that McDavid took such a huge NHL salary as well... it wouldn't be too much of a hop skip and jump away for him to sign two deals, one for Edmonton and another from Rexall (or it's market company) to market the pharmacy.

He could have got more on the open market for sure but it is true they will have to make some tough decisions. Already have, they are a weaker team this coming season and will be even weaker the following year.
Honestly though what is the alternative

A few things:
First, this deal is absolutely well below market value, which is determined by what the market will bear, and in this case if NM hit the UFA market his cap hit would be MUCH higher than $12.6 m
Second, if memory serves me correctly, Crosby's first deal once he hit UFA was likewise around 15% of the cap. But, more to the point, the type of deal that Crosby signed is no longer permitted under the current CBA. There was never any chance that MacKinnon deal was going to come in any lower than this. My expectation was that his cap hit would be closer to $13.0 m.

Weird. I was on the contrary surprised that McHobo's deal cane in as low as it did. But moreover, what you are describing above is against the current CBA rules, and would no doubt trigger an investigation.

It's amazing to me he has never had 100 points but injury is obviously why. Hopefully he can play a full season and outscore McDavid. He is already better in other areas of the game.

Oilers and Leafs fans on Twitter already saying that he is overpaid in this contract and bringing up the fact that he has never scored over a 100 points. What they failed to acknowledge was that big Mac has won, the Cup.

I absolutely love it! Drai comes up first and he'll ask for $13 just to topple Mac's and McD will ask for $15 so to be the highest in the league.
