So faced with the prospect of a fanbase aging out and shrinking, leagues are trying to find other avenues for people to engage with their product. Gambling is an obvious one. It’s a huge market, and drives engagement with people who have zero interest in sitting on a couch and watching a game for 2.5 hours strictly for the love of the game.
It’s annoying for traditional fans, but this is professional sports we’re talking about - everything is subordinated to the financial interests of the owners.

Well it's more than just annoying for traditional fans, gambling is addictive and destructive for a large percentage of society. Gambling registers higher than "annoying" for a lot of people seeing it being pushed and promoted while people watch sports.

Yeah, Vinny's anecdotal evidence is that most are NFL fans, in my circles you can bring up the Blue Jays and have a conversation about current games/series with nearly anyone vs some NFL fans.
Although, I'm pretty vocal about not liking NFL, so maybe that's part of it not coming up, lol.

You see, there used to be this thing called ‘spectator sport’.

Even before it was legal, the gambling angle was always a big part of NFL coverage. Jimmy the Greek had a regular spot on the CBS NFL broadcasts starting in the mid-70s and continued until he was fired after making racist comments on the air in the late 80s.
Fantasy sports have been around for decades. The oldest recognized one is 60 years old this year.
They may have been easier to ignore in the past, but the legal and illegal gambling and fantasy leagues have been a driving force behind the NFL's popularity for decades.

Makes sense as Canadian fans support of NHL, NFL, and CFL is fragmented between a lot of different teams. That 31% is likely nearly entirely comprised of Blue Jays fans. I don't think too many Canadians are tuning in for an A's vs Twins game.

Not disagreeing with you but by that thinking, they should look at advertisements for alcohol, as well then.

It's quite rare for alcoholics to spend their entire disposable income on alcohol. It's depressingly common for gambling addicts to lose every dollar they have on gambling.
Because of that, the gambling business depends a lot more heavily on people with addictions than the alcohol business does.

I was a manager at the elbow river Casino about 15 years ago. I had a lady one night try and commit suicide in the washroom after emptying her accounts and losing it. I absolutely think gambling should not be encouraged.
I had to quit after that night.

Many years ago, for a short time, I worked as a blackjack dealer. I didn't see anything as bad as you did, but what I did see was enough to make me quit, too.

Hearing Canucks talk all morning sounds like a prison sentence. How much hockey can you talk about at this time of year as there's not a whole lot going on at the moment.

I think the Fan has actually been pretty fine lately. Pat is back in the afternoons and I'm enjoying Logan Gordon along with him.
As I've said before, I also think Matt Rose is coming into his own and those are tough shoes to fill in the morning.

Curious to hear what they have in store next month and their "re-launch" or whatever its being referred to. Flames Talk has been great, enjoying the podcast format. Petty of me, but I started listening more once Nault was gone. Mornings are still a little rough, but not bad once you remove that wet blanket.
