His last deal he was way underpaid. I'd pay him this for 8 years in a heartbeat.

The cap is going to rise in the next few years so this will look even better.

I like MacKinnon even more. Only thing better would've been 12,500,000.01 AAV

Anyone have any good guesses why Year 4 is so special? It's the only year he has any real salary and almost no bonus.

Is that the year escrow is supposed to even out?

They could have paid him 15.5 and it would have been a good deal given how underpaid he's been on the last 5 years of his current contract.

Terrible deal for the avs, they're going to regret this really soon. They should just trade him to the Flames now to save the headache

That is the year the current CBA MOU expires. MacKinnon doing the Avs a favour by not having a huge signing bonus that year in case of lockout.

If there was a lockout the Avs would still be on the hook for paying out the bonus.

I don't really think this is a great deal for the Avs outside of the fact that they retain one of the best players in the game....It's a deal and probably right where it was expected to be.

He wasn't going to sign for $10.5M - maybe good job for keeping it under $13M? It will be interesting to see how the franchise navigates the next few seasons with a lot of high dollar deals on the books and Rantanen coming up again soon.

Obviously a star player deserving to be the highest paid player.

But I'm still surprised at the amount of signing bonus vs salary. I'm also surprised signing bonuses aren't capped at like 50% of the AAV or something like that.

That's crazy that at the beginning of the season he gets a fifteen million dollar check.

At least we all now know that the Oilers are going to have to completely cripple themselves to even be in the running to retain McDavid again in a few seasons (no way he stays after another 4 seasons of lackluster on ice results anyway).

No matter where he ends up, that deal will be structured around at least a $13.5M AAV and probably north of $100M in guaranteed money.

Are signing bonuses not subject to escrow or something to that effect? I'm just curious why it would be structured to be almost entirely signing bonus.

If your employer said they'd give you 90% of your annual salary on Jan 1 or spread throughout the year, what would you take?

GMs offer it to players because it's more enticing.

Buy-out proofing? Must be more to it than that as there's absolutely no risk of a buy out in the first few years of course.

As much as it's a "deal" it will be interesting to see how the Avs manage it next season

I was wondering if it was team serving or personal serving purpose. Nice. Thanks!

Probably en route to retiring from the NHL with the mantle of being the player who made the most money without ever winning a championship.

What is the reason for the split between salary and signing bonuses with the huge difference in allocation?

Yup, especially if the cap jumps $10+ million that year.

It will be interesting next summer if we see many players signing 2024 extensions a year in advance since there could be such a jump.
