How much are you signing him for? And why does Dallas make that trade anyway?

I’ve only seen one trade proposal for anyone who would be considered a top winger, and that’s Nylander. The Leafs don’t need Hanifin anyway and they aren’t trading Nylander for him.

I agree it's very unlikely unless someone goes down or Gio really turns into a pumpkin, it was more of what it would take for me to move him...that type of player

Nylander over Hanifin 15 times out of 10, and I like Hanifin.

This is basically why the “trade Hanifin for a top RW” isn’t a realistic take IMO. Leafs don’t want Hanifin, and they don’t need him any more than Calgary can afford to lose him. And they aren’t trading Nylander. And Calgary would need to shed salary anyway.

Actually, people keep proposing that the Flames should trade Hanifin for a top-six RW… which, in effect, means they're willing to give up a top-pairing D for a second-line forward. That would be a horrible move.

The deal is intriguing. That said, I thought Hanifin probably took as big of a step as Kylington did last year. Another year under Sutter, and some different looks offensively could just make him into a #1D. The only uncertainty I have about Hanifin is that he’s an American player, and his best buddy on the team(Chucky) just left. That’s a deal I might explore closer to the deadline, but Toronto has too many LD anyways.
I would personally explore a Zadorov trade before I would trade any of the top 6D. Out of the top 6, he provides the least bang for the buck. I think the cap crunch next season will pretty much force the issue, and he will be traded for a pick next summer.

Dube goes with him.
2 Yrs $6.5
1 Yr $6 —-> $8m x 5, Jan ‘23
Why? Well he’s not signed yet, seemingly going swimmingly between them.
While Dallas acquires a dman entering his prime to displace Suter, and a serviceable middle six winger, from an asset, and futures management consideration; not a ton of reason to.. Yet, we’ve often seen trades not make sense.
Am I banking on Dallas moving him? No. But to circle back, I was answering the question, of the Flames acquiring a winger, with arguably* greater value than Hanifin (*with consideration to Robertson AAV), that may be attainable.

^ Or they just sign Robertson, don’t downgrade their forwards and keep all their present D

I think just from an asset management perspective, you have to explore what Hanifin could get you on the market if you sold high on him. With Weegar in the mix, Hanifin might not be leaned on as much next season and could see his value diminish if he takes a step back in production. Hanifin has 2 years left on his contract and will likely be due for a big raise after that. His asset value may never be higher than it is now. If Weegar is signed long term, it might be difficult to keep Hanifin in 2 years just due to cap allotment.
You could argue trading any other defensemen, but I do think it makes sense to trade someone. Weegar and Andersson are the only other two that likely get you a similar return.
I am not saying that he needs to be traded or to trade him at all costs, but if the return is good and cost controlled, Treliving would be dumb to not try IMO. If there are no good deals out there though, by all means keep him.

Well that’s obviously, what’s very likely to occur. You’re kind of a curmudgeon, in that you thrive on criticizing trade suggestions. The basis of the thread after all, with very little creative suggestions.
Imagine the suggestion in June of Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, a 1st a prospect. And your excitement at a rebuttal.
And may I ask, why Hanifin wouldn’t be a lift to the Leafs d-corps, while jettisoning Nylander. I’ve read you “it’s unrealistic, and they don’t need him”. Why specifically? Is it to ensure they’re still 2nd in goals for, but remain the worst goals against of any playoff team?

Toronto would absolutely love to have Hanifin, he's better than any of their D, except maybe Morgan Reilly. I just don't see them parting with Nylander, as their forward group would be too thin. If they could trade Sandin for a forward of substance, perhaps the situation would be different, but that won't happen.

LOL, I rarely criticize trade suggestions.
As for Nylander, the Leafs surprisingly have a strong D corps on an individual basis. Top 4 of Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie, Lillgren. Heck, Gio and Sandin are good too and a good price. They aren’t paying Hanifin to come in and play 5-6. Their GAA is down to goaltending and poor team play in their own zone.
Plus, the Leafs got thinner up front last ear. They have two pairings on the top 6, with a bunch of inserts at LW on each line. They aren’t going to drop their 4th best fwd.

Valimaki and a 2026 second round pick for Mitch Marner at 50%. Maybe the Flames add Dube and the rights to Hanowski and/or Jankowski....but it would have to happen now to make sense.
|
Yeah he was slashed on the hands. The poster was inferring Johnny is at risk of a serious injury because he small and can’t handle getting hit int he NHL. Very different things.

Probably not. His advanced stats are reportedly weak, and despite the highlight reels, he wasn't all that great offensively, really. Worth a flyer certainly.

First it wasn't a proposal I was saying what it would take to move him for me. Basically I wouldn't unless it's a high end winger.
Second Hanifin wouldn't be 5/6
Brodie, Muzzin, you can't be serious
Hanifin would easily be in the top 4 in Toronto

No no, we need EXACT proposals here. No ideas, specific and detailed proposals and they better be damn perfect! Otherwise don’t even mention the fact that we need RW help.

Top 4 D > top 6 RW
