So the Sharks will only get a $1.5MM penalty for the next three years?

I don't understand how they get out of this contract, and that's the only penalty they receive.

Sometimes this league is just an absolute joke.

I mean technically it is fair, it’s the same cap hit spread between Edmonton and San Jose. It’s the same if they traded him with salary retained.

No it's not fair.

They got rid of a cancer of a player essentially for free.

Why couldn't the Flames just say Sean Monahan kicked his puppy once, so we're terminating his contract. Then he signs for another team and "it's fair" because he gets paid again by someone else.

Cap circumvention much.

I agree with that but I wonder what the situation would be if Kane didn't get to play with McDavid and he struggled getting a contract this summer.

I'm not sure why it should be any different than that.

I don't get the "joke" remark.

The answer to that question is blowing in the wind. At least that's what Bob Dylan told me.

Because Monny didn't kick his puppy.

But to play your game, if they did terminate his contract, and Monny received another contract this year, presumably for about $1M, the Flames would be hit with a "penalty" (and cap hit) for the difference.

The cancer that SJ got rid of was a highly sought after player.

Does this have any bearing on his deal in Edmonton? Just wondering if they will have to eat anything on it(please please please).

I'm sure Kane wouldn't be willing to go for a settlement in that situation.

I think both sides wanted to avoid the same result, which was Kane being forced to go back to San Jose. That made it pretty easy to negotiate something.

Friedman corrected his original tweet. It looks like the penalty will only be $833K for three years.

Lol no he wasn't...he cleared waivers multiple times. nobody wanted the guy, he was in the AHL. Somehow the Sharks get out of the terrible cap hit and the Oilers got him for league min last season which is also BS.

The good part is that this didn't happen prior to any deal signed by the Oilers, who no doubt could have had that for a much smaller cap hit and brought in more high end (or even just enough) players.

The sharks fumbled this. Did they not have a strong case? Kane is basically made whole as if he hadn't done anything wrong? I heard from someone here that the team had busted that contract on the back of their own legal counsel and reassurance from league lawyers that their case was strong.

Sharks went from one of the best run teams to a gongshow. Not sure what Grier is thinking here.

I'm not sure this is Griere's call. Kane's contract was terminated before Griere was named GM.

He's likely being advised by the Sharks' legal team here.

I hear you. More that it's an about face from their stance before. I think Grier is involved to the extent he wants this headache gone.
