I agree but I do think Weegar is very underrated right now. Weegar was only 8 points off Hedman and 13 off Makar at even strength.

He's also top 20 in hits by a dman, 2 blocks behind Tanev for top 10 and his possession numbers are off the charts good. 11th in PK mins by a dman.

Not much he can't do

Cold feet discussion points:

- late round pick and drafted as an overager (if i count correctly) but counter point? we know a thing or two about late bloomer blueliners

- wasn't anything great in his D+1 year in the Q but counter point? Q is a strange place to measure defensemen

- couldn't hack it in the AHL and ended up playing in the ECHL but counter point? yeesh

- up until last season, his longest season was 64 games but counter point? Less wear on those tires! Indiana Jones says is not the years...it's the mileage

OK, I have to ask… What's a ‘pleb filter’ in hockey?

I read it as a “Tanev”? Put him with anyone and the pairing does well. Might be way off though.

Short for "plebian", a peasant or commoner.

I know what a plebeian is. I even have some idea what a ‘pleb filter’ is in other forms of entertainment. What I don't get is how it can be a description of a hockey player.

I think this is what JFresh is getting at — "plebs" (more casual fans) see Weegar as maybe a top-four guy, but die-hards know he's a top D. Asking someone what they think of Weegar is a good way to filter out whether they're a "pleb" or they know what they're talking about.

It's a bit sanctimonious, but I think that's the gist of it.

It's a lot sanctimonious, and it's something you see on all message boards; the general feeling that the hard posters know more than everyone else.

Now it's often true, that's a fact, but it isn't always true.

it's exactly what irks me about some of the advanced stats folks. I do value the numbers and think they tell you a lot, but the holier than thou attitude is nauseating.

They're the real life version of the old 'Ummm, Ackchyually" meme

I think Scorp is right, and I also think Devo hit the nail on the head.

Advanced stat guys very often come across as "hey, I respect your opinion and all that, but now I am going to explain to you what is really happening here". Many of the true believers are way over-indoctrinated, and jfresh would probably qualify on that front, IMO.

Stats guys put way too much credence in their numbers, but then they often top it off with the holier than thou condescension.

As someone who spent an entire career waist-deep in stats, where one of the most important things is filtering out all of the noise and the data mining, and following the doctrine that you can never really be certain with the results, watching these guys be so in love with their numbers, which are so riddled with noise, can be pretty painful.

The problem is that advanced stat people never have to watch the game. They specifically gather data from sources and use the data to form an opinion or support their evaluation of a player. I have done a lot of minor player evaluations and it is very different than watching the game, but it essentially has the same result without the need to quantify it. Tanev is a great example, most thought he was a serviceable top 4 when he signed in Calgary, but with many viewings over the course of the season he provided more than what we initially expected. If you specifically evaluated him over the course of 10 games, many would have determined it a lot sooner. I appreciate what advance stats can do because then in certain situations I can look to see how players react without having focus on specific aspects of the play and be able to enjoy the flow and pace of the game.

I think the problem is, you guys take the stats guys more seriously than they take themselves.

And that might be where the disconnect is.

Its pretty easy. The hockey teams need to use a 50-50 approach. half analytics and half eye test and other intangibles. Both can be a great resource. Their is good tech out their might as well use it.
