Considering that unit was part of the first attack on Ukraine and so has been out of the Moscow area for longer than the war has lasted, I doubt these things are connected.

If there is non-logistical reason, it would be to prepare for and prevent possible internal unrest.

BBC reporting they've verified a video showing the Wagner group chief on a recruiting tour in prisons, telling inmates that if they serve six months in Wagner, they're free.

These recruits would probably be fighting on the front lines for Russia, with minimal training. That give you what a 1/4 chance of death and a 1/2 chance of serious injury?

It's tradition. The Red Army used rape as a weapon in Eastern Europe and Germany during and well after the war. Orders were to break the German spirit.

The more I think about it, any of those prisoners who take that Wagner deal are likely getting a very raw deal.

Assignment 1: Guard these APCs on an exposed Ukrainian road...

Then 6 months comes up...I've altered the deal so that you are serving an additional 6 months pray that I don't alter it any further.
