I'm curious to know what people think of the idea of a stat holiday? I'm not a monarchist in general, but I kind of think that if you are a constitutional monarchy and the longest serving monarch in your history passes away there should be a day to recognize that (not every year).

I think it should be, but they totally blew it. They plan for everything else, did someone not think ahead to this? This should have been decided years ago(obviously not the date, but the expectation). Now it's a weird mishmash.

Prince Harry doesn't get to wear his military uniform to the funeral, despite being an actual combat veteran; two tours. Apparently it's because he's no longer a "working royal" so he's just an ordinary veteran and ex-military can't wear their uniforms anymore. But a "working royal" who is a military veteran CAN wear the uniform because they retain honorary military titles.

Kind of an interesting story.

Selfishly I would love more stat holidays but they cost billions and are hard on small business. The timing certainly isn't ideal given the current deficit state. I get that she was longest serving but where do you draw the line? If King Charles III serves for 20 years and dies he's lesser because he was the longest serving heir apparent?

I obviously would love to have an extra day off regardless of the reason. But, with regards to businesses I can understand how it would be problematic and a hassle. The staffing issues around employees who might not have child care and having to provide stat pay would not be good. At my work the stat on Monday likely falls on our month end review day so everyone involved with that process will likely be working anyways.

I liked and respected the Queen, but we don't need a holiday.
Not since the age of being able to record things that are on TV.

You want to see the funeral and mourn her passing, record it and watch it when you have time.

I don't see why a funeral, even for the Queen of England, should cost the country tens of millions or several billion dollars.

No stat holiday please, unless it’s a one-off for this year only. I don’t operate a business any more but I believe it would be an unnecessary burden for businesses, many of which are already struggling.

This whole thing has been communicated so poorly, basically nobody gets a stat holiday anyways. Just federal government employees (not even all federally regulated employers as it doesn't mandate the private sector), some provincial government employees, and a few maritime provinces. The other 95% of us still have to work. Ta-da! Public holiday!
