Alcaraz becomes the 8th Spanish man to win a slam, and it's the 30th men's slam win by Spain (2nd most to America).

He also becomes the first male teen since Sampras to win the US Open and the first man since Nadal to win a slam as a teen.

This kid is something special, he's going to win many more slams and unlike the big 3, at this time I don't see a peer that is capablel of stopping him.

Some players take longer to develop than others. I still believe with Felix it will come eventually, he is currently undefeated against Alcaraz (just don't look up the match )

Medvedev didn't win his first slam until 25 and didn't break out until 22.

If I was coaching Felix, I’d be looking for ways to increase control in his forehand. How? To get the racquet head quieter.

- Maintaining wrist extension in the set-up. This would also naturally get his strings down—something I think helps tremendously with control.

- Shortening the swing. Thiem did this and became a hardcourt threat. It allowed him to control a flat ball and play up in the court with more consistency.

- Increasing racquet swingweight.

While Felix’s forehand can and has been a major weapon, and there is an argument there is nothing wrong with it technically, his backhand is a liability, and his recent backhand performances have shown a pretty glaring weakness. Again, his racquet head seems very noisy—there’s a lot of drop and a lot of wrist action. To be clear, I am an advocate for dropping the racquet head below the ball, but I think the major weakness in his backhand is due to the position his racquet head takes in the set-up. It’s outside his hands, or at best in line with them, but away from his body, which makes the racquet head noisy and almost swinging out-to-in.

Shows how much I know about tennis since I always thought his technique was clean. I’ve been so mystified why an Uncle Toni disciple would hit long so damn often, even with heavy spin.

Genie Bouchard is playing the Chennai Open this week and she just won her opening round match 7-6 6-2 over #167 ranked Joanne Zuger of Switzerland.

Edit: Rebecca Marino is playing the same tourney and she was also victorious in her opening round match.

Davis Cup starts tomorrow, geez that's a tight turnaround for Alcaraz. Canada starts vs South Korea should be a win with Felix playing.

This quote sums up the frustration of both Felix and Shapo. It's something that coaching can help correct but the question will always be if they are mentally strong enough to not lapse into mistakes at critical moments in matches. I'm not sure Shapo has the mental makeup but they are both too young to write off as their best years are hopefully still ahead of them.

“Their (Felix and Denis Shapovalov) upside when they’re playing well—their talent level—is as good as anybody. They both can’t sustain it. They’ll give you games with just errors, and right now, Felix is just filled with errors. We’ve played only two games and he’s made eight unforced errors.”
