Izyum and Lyman were a massive accumulation point for Russian forces in the north. There could be a ton of spoils found in the coming days.

Any chance Ukraine advances into Russia later? that would be awesome if they doubled their size after all of this.

They're going to have to knock out Belgorod at some point. Even now with all the good news, the Russians shoot rockets at Kharkiv's residential areas not only because they are f'ing pussies, but it's the only thing they know how to do correctly; target civilians.
It's been a long time coming and at some point, something is going to have to get done about those terrorist attacks coming from that area. Belgorod needs to get hit hard. I say that as someone with in-laws there.

According to this rumor, a force equal to a tenth of Russia's initial invasion force did not make it out of Izyum, and is trying to get assurances that Ukraine abides by Geneva conventions on the treatment of POWs before surrendering.
Oh I hope it's true.

The amount of atrocities we've seen (and there will be many many more) and the Russians are asking others to play nice?

Funny how that works, isn't it?
Can Ukraine even take on 10,000 prisoners at once? I assume most of the rank and file would just be deported back to Russia and then re-invade if there is another wave. If it was up to me, they would all have their trigger fingers cut off first. I suspect there is a Geneva Convention against that though.

This would likely end support from the West.

If the plan has been to let China grab Siberia, than the answer is likely yes. Ukraine will try to recapture Crimea. Once it's done, they may go after Belgorod so to transfix
some Russian forces on the west and don't let them move over to cover Siberia.

Sure seems like we're forgetting that Russia has nukes here. Crimea might be possible but nobody's going to be rolling back the borders to 1860.

1. Not sure if Russian nukes can function.
2. Russian doctrine does not imply a nuclear strike over an attack on something like Belgorod. NATO clearly has no problem launching missiles at Russian proper like Belgorod and Kursk areas.
3. It feels like nukes sort of cancel each other out. What if Japan would grab some islands on far east? Will Russia go into a suicidal nuclear exchange over it? I guess not. What if China would go after Siberia and say don't stop us or we nuke Moscow. It's tricky.
4. I generally get a feeling that this whole nuclear MAD is not as straight forward and "military experts" don't quite understand how it works. Russia can nuke Kyiv but it doesn't. It's a devastating defeat for Putin and he actually CAN win if he nukes, but he doesn't. Why? Nuke Kyiv and then it's up to NATO to either give up or nuke Moscow and get NY nuked in return. Something stops him. I don't know what.
5. At the start of the war common argument was that the west will look another way and let Ukraine fall because Putin has nukes. Putin said point blank that any county that interferes with the war "will face consequences they have never seen in their history" (i.e.nukes). Apparently the prevailing military analysis was wrong. West is clearly not that afraid of Russian nukes. NATO openly provides funds, weapons and intelligence,Putin knows it, yet he can do nothing. I feel like Russian nukes are kind of overrated.

Yeah it does make me a little nervous about the idea that the Russians might be embarrassed here.

I think they already are. You'd have thought Afghanistan would have taught them that invasion is never a cakewalk.

Trying to find a link for verification but apparently Russia has been giving Donetsk and Luhansk people Russian passports. Except that these people are being denied entry to Russia at the borders. Also the republic soldiers are being told to disarm at the borders as well. No surprise considering how Russia has been using their soldiers as cannon fodder but still pretty disgraceful.

I was thinking this as well. West will support them in the struggle to get their lands back. If they start reaching beyond that, I think the supplies will stop rolling in.
