My proudest possession is the signed #34 jersey hanging in my living room. Good luck finding him to sign jerseys ever again.
For that same reason, his number will never be retired because he will not show up for the ceremony. He has always shunned the spotlight and I believe would detest being the centre of attention for an entire ceremony. Can anyone here actually envision Kipper making a long speech at centre ice?

Only if his voice was narrated by Mike Richard's doing fake Mikka.
Oh some of those were gold.

"Like pucks through Cloutier's pads, these are the Flames of our lives."
Mike Richards was the best thing on Calgary radio during his time here.

I don't think it's crazy to call Kipper inconsistent, he had a few years where he was fighting with groin issues from being overused. It's just that Kipper off his game was an average goalie.

This wasn’t a thing
He once had a knee injury
But recurring groin issues? A few years?
That didn’t happen
Mike Keenan allowing beer league quality D and backchecking resulted in some more human stats. But that thing you said? Not a thing

How do you think Patrick Roy, Dom Hasek or even Luongo (mid 30s) would've faired instead? IMO much better
I loved Kipper but his peak was short, by the end he was terrible. It wasn't like his game completely imploded in one year either. Pretty steady and noticeable decline after the Vezina

I dunno what to tell you. I already said he was top 2 Flames goaltender of all time. Do you want me to say he was jesus in net for this entire career?
|
Well I don’t want you to say that.
But if you STFU, that would be appreciated.

70+ games 7 straight years.
They needed a Jake Allen/Jaro Halak level backup almost as badly as they needed a #1C.
He’s not the GOAT at the position, but there’s no sense arguing he’s the GOAT goalie as far as the franchise who drafted Trevor Kidd over Martin Brodeur is concerned.

Wasn't he the king of the game after losing and letting in 5 or 6 goals. I seem to remember he would ALWAYS shut the door the game after a loss.

Many people feel the same about Vernon as a Flame. A generational thing.
Luv Kipper. This is not a comparison but Vernon was a teen and took us to the Cup final.

I still don't understand how "hockey experts" decided no goalies from that era have made it to the hf except Fuhr and Roy. Objectively Vernon was a much much better goalie than Fuhr.
From a franchise point of view Kipper is the best we've had so far.

No groin issues...he had a lingering hip injury from 2005-2007....two of his best seasons. The years where kipper had poor stats he drug the team into the playoffs and was their best player in those playoffs.

Top 5 in vezina voting for 4 straight seasons
Top 8 in 6/9 seasons
Top 5 in Hart voting twice.
Seems like a franchise caliber goalie to me.

I've hoarded up on kipper stuff if this ever happens. Not holding my breath.
Crazy the only time he's been seen was at that random Flames game. Classic Kipper. He probably just showed up at the ticket office and tried to buy a single seat when someone recognized him and ushered him in LOL

Kipper is the Flames best goalie of all time.
That doesn't auto-qualify for a jersey retirement IMO. Community work, longevity, personality, etc all play a part. That's why Iggy and Lanny were easy choices. Vernon should not be up there, but it's not egregious either.
Al MacInnes' greatness should have him up there. He's a top-5 dman of all time. Conn Smythe and STILL the all-time assists leader.

I agree Vernon's retirement took me back a bit he was no Lanny or Iggy in the community. Also stunned Nieuwendyk is a Forever Flame after what he did not honoring his contract. In that light no reason Fleury isn't retired, at least he honored his contract he is goof, but not like Nieuwendyk isn't.

Fleury is a dick. Disparages the organization publicly.
