With 04 Kipper I imagine the Flames odds at the cup are very good. Maybe a coin flip.

At least there's one other person out there that makes me feel like I'm not taking crazy pills. He's the Flames best goaltender, I guess, if you feel like Vernon's cup doesn't push him past Kipper. But Kipper was wildly inconsistent too, and has no cup.

Just look at the teams in front of Vernon and Kiprusoff. A Stanley cup is 80% luck/getting hot at the right time, or being on a pre salary cap studded team.

Would you take Huet or Crawford over Belfore?

Osgood over Hasek?

If it’s a results based business than Fuhr must be close to Roy and Broduer.

Well I'm glad you chimed in since you know nothing about hockey. lol

Kipper was wildly inconsistent? maybe in his last year after his season ending injury.

EVERY NIGHT he started you didn't have to worry about him coughing up a weak one. It was the best feeling as a Flames fan that you didn't have to worry about goaltending at all.

All we were worried about was if we were going to score 2 goals a night every night.

Literally the first time I’ve ever heard of Miikka Kiprusoff being described as “wildly inconsistent.”

I wouldn't be surprised if the Flames have wanted to honour him in some way and he's said no. Though I'm not sure if they would have offered number retirement.

But it's also one of the main reasons Chopper's number isn't retired. He didn't want it to be retired by the Flames because he fancies himself more a Blue.
He’s been at one of the games just pre-pandemic. Sat in the owners’ suite. The Dome went absolutely wild when the jumbotron camera zoomed on him. Can’t wait to see his number up there. My favourite Flame of all times. I was lucky enough to meet Kipper, talk to him and even had him call my son to talk about junior hockey. Just a 100% classy and good person.

I think that was the beauty of Kipper. He was the exact opposite of "wildly inconsistent".

What an odd take.

Kipper was very consistent but every goalie gives up the odd weak goal. Matt Sundin's 500th overtime goal was an example.

4 of his 9 seasons as a starter for the Flames (and no, not all the last 4) he was below replacement level save %.

I dunno what to tell you. I already said he was top 2 Flames goaltender of all time. Do you want me to say he was jesus in net for this entire career?

After he left there was a lot of talk about who could be the next Kipper. But it’s a fools errand. We may never have a goaltender like him again. And that won’t be a slight on any current or future tenders

The best goaltender I have seen, and fortunately had the honour of seeing, night in and night out, hands down

That highlight reel is not the highlight reel of your everyday good NHL goalie

There are shots you should stop, shots you could stop, and shots you can’t stop

He blurred the lines between could and can’t, and just ####ing did it anyway. Most goalies can’t and don’t make those saves.

Some people look at the raw stats. It’s a fool’s errand without context. Remember what Keenan did? Loosen the reins. Outscore your problems. Never mind D. Kipper’s got you. People point to league average stats, but it was behind the equivalent of beer league D

Flames can do what they want. It doesn’t matter. I like Macoun. He was a Leaf when I saw him punch Gretzky in the ear, and that cemented his status as excellent. But 34 Calgary is Kipper and always will be

What a beauty that guy was

No, but it’s revisionist history to say he was wildly inconsistent. If you said that at the time, you’d have looked like a moron… more of a moron.

I feel Kipper's contribution deserves number retirement. He has the franchise numbers and in the 33 years since 1989 this franchise has had one run to the finals. That bright spot in decades of mediocrity simply couldn't have happened without him.

Put 2004 Kipper on the Flames now and they'd be setting some league records for wins while on their way to a cup.

I've always been under the impression Kipper is elusive as they come and doesn't care for the spotlight. Even if he doesn't want to make the trip I'm sure the organization could still put the number up there, as embarrassing as it would be if he didn't come out.

Seems like at this point his number isn't an option and they are holding off for when he either makes the trip or in the (hopefully distant) future when he passes on. Otherwise they wouldve added him to the Forever a Flame group

Yeah that’s just it. It would be too embarrassing to hang his number without him there
