Imagine being a Russian grunt right now trying to hold a position while getting whooped by advanced NATO weapons.

What could possibly be your motivation to stay and fight?

Even if you cared that deeply about the poor Ukrainian civilian being subjugated by their Nazi government, do you really want to die defending and liberating them?

Your motivation is that you'll be executed if you go AWOL, and there could be blowback to your family back home as well.

Now Kherson front has been very silent, but very much not because of Russian wins, total blackout still remains with little glimpses mostly from the Russian side on how poorly things are going

Rybar hasn't updated their Kherson maps in recent days for Baron to repost, seems they got preoccupied with other recent events and busy trying to find a positive narrative out of the Kharkiv debacle.

Russian media report that "Ukrainians won't be able to hold on their newly-won positions near Kharkiv". You can tell things are not going well for Russia.

"Russian forces are in tough spot at Kharkiv area". It's on Russian main search engine front page right now (roughly equivalent of yahoo.com main page). First time ever something like this comes up on the mainstream media.

Wow, even Tsargrad - a channel owned by a close friend of Dugin, where both him and his daughter featured prominently - is now reporting that "current losses near Kharkiv reveal problems that have been talked about for months". Nothing even close to this have been in mainstream and pro-Z media until now. Of course they try to spin it with "Russians have triumphantly blocked the Ukrainian's attempt to advance" and "elite Chechen forces are about to join in and inflict a devastating defeat to Ukranians", but they quite openly admit "serious problems".

Yeah, that's really the thing, isn't it?

I recall either hearing or reading a quote somewhere, it might have been in a Dan Carlin podcast, or possibly in "The End" by Ian Kershaw about how the Germans managed to keep fighting for so long.

It was from a German, speaking about the American advance after D-Day.

"If these Americans spent lives the way the Russians do, they'd be in Berlin in a week."

I'm still amazed how when this started I totally bought into the propaganda of the Russian war machine.
I didn't think Ukraine had a chance and Kiev would fall in a week.

I could not be happier that I was so ill informed and wrong.

From Zelenskyy's leadership and diplomatic skills all the way down to the average citizens devotion to country and people.

I know it's not over, and the recovery is going to be really hard, but the last few days have been great to see.

Rybar is panicking, and provides the Russia propaganda narrative in a way only a Russia propagandist social network can. Ukraine saw weakness and went after the guys that have batons and shields and that you cannot defend everything.

Speaking globally about the current stage of the war in Ukraine, we do not believe that the attack on Kherson is a military trick designed to divert attention from Kharkov. The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine alternately puts pressure on all possible pain points. Undercover intelligence of Ukrainians on the ground gives an excellent idea of what is happening at the front. Despite all the seemingly mistakes and miscalculations of the Ukrainian command, the reports on the ground simply emphasize the possibilities: for example, in this sector there are now mobilized unshot recruits, and here the Russian Guard with batons and shields. Let's go here. And this pressure happens consistently. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have enough forces and means. When the task is to fill up the front with "meat", whose purpose is to die heroically for the glory of Ukraine, you can not spare people and equipment. They will put and mobilize more. Russian troops are selflessly good at defense and counterattack. But in a war where you are covered with meat, and denunciations to the SBU fly from every doorway, you cannot constantly defend yourself and counterattack in secondary areas. Both the attack on Kherson and the attack on Kharkov proved that there were no secondary directions for them. #Russia #Ukraine #Kharkov #Kherson
@rybar
I would love to hear Baron's take on the current situation. UA numbers show 640 KIA just today alone including 32 pieces of artillery. A lieutenant colonel and hundreds to thousands of soldiers captured in a single day. Both Izyium and Kupyiansk (yes they have moved this fast) in imminent danger of attack encirclement.

Defense of Ukraine chimes in today.

@noclador is another excellent source, although there are probably about half a dozen I routinely check in with.

The 50K estimate for Russian KIA is almost certainly inflated. At the normal 3:1 wounded to killed ratio, Russia's entire invasion force would have been wiped out with those numbers. Most 3rd party estimates I've seen suggest about half that number of killed.

But even that amount is catastrophic compared to any of their wars since WWII. In 10 years in Afghanistan, they only had about 15K killed.

There was a report released in Russia yesterday outlining the amount of money paid out for KIAs, the total divided by the payout per loss totalled 48,000.

Yes, the figure seems to combine KIAs and wounded.

Quote:
After six months of war, the Russian and Ukrainian armies are both bruised and battered. Perhaps 15,000 Russians have been killed and 45,000 have been wounded, said Bill Burns, the head of the cia, last month. Ukrainian casualties were only “a little less”, he estimated.
