There's a giant leap from his previous activity to this mass murder.
He struck another criminal using a gun as a blunt object and, as you say, he an intoxication induced brawl with his spouse and the cops. The 4 years would be pretty common for actually hitting a police officer in the face multiple times. It sounds like he was ripped out of his mind when he did that, but that's not going to get you off the hook.
There's nothing in there to indicate he would go a mass murder spree with a machete. There also seems to be something more to the story, as he, initially anyways, had an accomplice in his brother. This doesn't fit with his previous MO of intoxication induced rage incidents. This was likely something planned, with a motive. The incident happened in a small community, so all the victims were likely known to the Sanderson brothers.

So much for 'there was no indication to say he would do something like this.' Great job justice system.

Sanderson had been repeatedly accused of threatening to kill members of the James Smith Cree Nation and had stabbed two with a cheese knife in April 2018,(????) the court file indicates.
On January 26, 2015, Sanderson was charged in Prince Albert, Sask., with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons possession following the knife attack on his in-laws.
He was also charged with breach of probation for failing to comply with a judge’s order in 2014 that not consume alcohol and “keep the peace and be of good behaviour,” his court file shows.
Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, assault and threatening to kill Earl Burns. He was sentenced on Oct. 28, 2015, to two years, less a day and fined.

And, as weird as this is to bring up, there are a lot of different kinds of cheese knives...some would be far more dangerous than others...

His rap sheet is still unremarkable. Which is sad.
Maybe we can do better, but that extends well beyond the justice system.

I’m glad they caught him alive and it’s over and that people may grieve and get some closure. Also so that we may know exactly what happened and possibly why.
Nobody should become this violent.

There has been a dangerous persons alert every day in Sask since Sep 4. There was one in Maidstone as well that was missed in this thread (since cancelled). And now one in Edmonton too? WTAF is going on?

From the article:
Despite his long record of crime and violence spanning his adult life, Sanderson was not considered an undue risk to society by the Parole Board of Canada as recently as February.

Sounds like it's two separate incidents, with the 2015 one being pretty serious, which he pled down to 2 years plus a day.
Really strange that the 2015 incident wasn't included in other articles.
Based on what I've read here, there was a pretty severe failure by the parole board. I don't see grounds to keep him locked up any longer, but he definitely should have been kept away from his ex-wife and family.
This wasn't a random attack, as initial reports made it out to be. It was a targeted attack on his wife's family.

Whoa man!! Lets not...they cant get into those kind of 'Big League' circles just yet.
First they have to surpass Surrey, and then they have to conquer 'Stabmonton.'
And thats just to get them into the same conversation as Detroit.
You dont just swing for the King right out of the gates!

Didn't other articles posted in this thread say the exact opposite?
