Just suggesting try to at least keep the name going otherwise I look at this thread and have zero idea what its about.

After the following 2023-24 season, the only blueliner signed is Rasmus.
Next summer you could extend Hanifin. What would that cost? $8mm? Or if Noah leaves, then that $8mm needs to go to another top pairing blueliner.
Weegar would be $8mm?
Rasmus at $4.5mm. I assume Tanev will be broken down by then.
That is ~$20mm for your top 3 blueliners. Not great but not too bad. I think this works if Weegar comes in around that $8mm area. Anything less is juicy. We currently spend $25mm on 7 defensemen.

I would take that bet.
I don't think the Flames would trade Weegar under any circumstances in-season unless they are clearly out of the playoff mix. He's the Flames's "playoff rental," but comes with the added bonus of potentially a long-term extension.

If he plays out the season and has a really good year he could definitely get $8.0 m.

Weegar is better than Nurse...I know that's a terrible contract but I think this might be wishful thinking

Fair enough. I am not in the camp of letting him start the season here without a contract.
Also he could play 40 games this season and have an average year, and be looking at 5 mil in the off season.

Gudbransson got $4 mil. I doubt Weegar is getting $5 or $6mil. I'm hoping for $6.75 but I bet it will be $7 mil or slightly more

I think it's pretty obvious that Columbus over paid by 1.5 a year.
But ya maybe Weegar is worth 7+

Exactly.
It's why I don't get why Florida didn't structure the deal to keep one or both of their expiring contracts.
Teams that are in it shouldn't move rentals themselves. Makes zero sense.
Especially after you just moved 4 years of 1st round picks to win now.

My guess is that this was a shake up the dressing room trade. I saw some rumours/comments on the Panthers board that Huberdeau was out late at night with some other players before the last game against Tampa

Yeah with Barkov and Ekblad and basically the whole team
If that is the actual reason the move is even worse than I thought

Down 3-0 to the 2x defending champs, I’d be out late trying to slump bust too.

If he doesn’t sign, trade him for a top 6 forward

I would guess the team's thought process is pretty similar.
I think the fact that he hasn't been traded yet means he's going to sign, as a trade is less likely now with teams at their cap limits than it was when they made the Tkachuk trade.
They're well aware that they won't likely move him at the deadline if they're in a good spot in the standings, so the move was in the next couple three weeks after the original trade.
Couple that with comments from guys like Steinberg saying take it to the bank, and this deal is getting done.
I've honestly thought little about it.

Steinberg also kept saying Johnny was going to sign and was bullish on it until about a week before free agency. I think his source is ever positive Conroy...

Steinberg always hedged his bets there. He kept putting a percentage to how sure he was that Gaudreau would be back.

Weegar for Chychrun?
Makes zero sense for Arizona. They will deal Chychrun for picks, prospects, and young players. Not guys in their prime.

I do think there’s a time limit on Weegar not extending - if it passes that point, I suspect they ask him “where would you extend?” And then do another sign and trade with one of his preferred destinations.
But all things considered, I’d rather have Weegar.
