We got Huberdeau inked. Weegar if he doesn't want to sign can kick rocks down the road at the deadline for a good haul.
I'm honestly okay with whatever Weegars outcome will be. He signs, or he doesn't, meh.

I think Brad has his guys in Huberdeau and Kadri. He can work with Weegar thru the season to see if they can make a deal. If it turns out that he can't sign Weegar...you should get a guy who's very motivated to play well and get his one chance at a big contract, and cap space to work with next year in what likely is another year where teams will be squeezed.

If you are Weegar, do you just hope to have a big year under Sutter and have it pay off like Gudbranson, or are you worried about having a UFA off-season like Klingberg?
I would personally be looking for a decent and fair extension, especially looking at how competitive this team is built for the next foreseeable future.

Problem is if he wants to have a big year here without a contract he won't be around for long anyways. The Flames can't wait forever to trade him. So they could trade him to a crap team and he could have a poor season stats-wise. If I was him I'd be looking for a fair deal with the Flames sooner than later. Like you said, it's going to be a good team for the next few years, it's a good situation for him if the offer is decent.

Even if he's not re-signed, why would the Flames trade him in a year they're going for it?
In that case, you're trading an underrated top pairing defenseman for assets that you HOPE you can then trade for as good a player at/before the deadline, a player that's also likely a pending UFA.
If anything, keep him as a one year rental.
Would be dumb to trade who is likely our best defenseman when the Flames are as good as they are

After the Gaudreau situation there's no chance they let him walk for nothing.

As good as he is, and as much as he'll mean to our playoff run, I would say if Weegs isn't signed by the deadline-trade him. We'll get a big haul.

And then you’re one Tanev injury away from getting worked again.

If we're having a good year, then he's worth as much to us as he is to anyone else. No need to sell a pending free agent if we have a chance to take a run.
If anything, the Gaudreau situation just showed that if your guy doesn't take the money, you can find a replacement with the cap space.

Flames aren't trading Weegar if he is unsigned unless they have a disaster season and are out of the playoff hunt.
IMO

Yeah, basically trading him would mean you’d have to go get a rental. In other words, he’d be the rental.

It wouldn't be for nothing. They would have 7 million more in cap space next season.

teams lose UFAs for nothing every season...I think its silly to think the Flames will never keep another UFA past the deadline because of Gaudreau
Heck, lots of teams not only lose them for nothing they lose the assets they spend on them only a couple months earlier in the case of a rental.

Cap means nothing unless you can sign someone good

Depends when they trade him, and what the return is.
Yes, if they hold on to him until the TL and only get a pick back or something else underwhelming then of course you keep him.
If you trade him early on in the season for a big return and something that makes sense then they probably do that.
I believe he's signing soon anyways so it doesn't really matter IMO.

I think he signs soon as well but if they are going to deal him what about Chychrun? Is that a deal you would make?

Why wouldn’t he re-up with the western conference Stanley cup finalist? Don’t worry about Weegars contract, he’ll be convinced by the season.

Just a suggestion for those of us who jump in to read a few threads before work.
This thread appears to be from way back somewhere and the writers have totally forgotten to note exactly whom they are talking about? Is this Weegar? Hanafin? Kjillington.
Just suggesting try to at least keep the name going otherwise I look at this thread and have zero idea what its about.
