I'm really curious: why do you (and others) think this? I look at Thornton and I absolutely do not see this, at all. Just because he's been around for 25 years does not mean he brings anything other than experience.

Besides, if he signs for another year, he can give his buddy Marleau a hard time that he's coming for his games played record.
Isn't he only about 50 or 60 games behind?

But he only played 34 last year, and if he was in Calgary, he surely wouldn't play much more than that barring catastrophic injuries.

Thornton is one of those guys where I've never quite been able to figure out why but for whatever reason I just can't stand him. Hard pass.

I could see him going to a rebuilding team with the agreement that they try to trade him to a contender at the deadline. Assuming he plays well enough to warrant it of course. It would be a win-win. The team gets a free asset to help rebuild and Thornton could then go to a team that has more certainty to win a Cup at the deadline, rather than rolling the dice right now.

I'm not sure why people are so hard against signing Thornton to a PTO. A PTO is only a tryout. It doesn't mean they're stuck with him for the season.

You don't give a guy a tryout unless there is a job for him to try out for. Do the Flames have a job opening for a 43-year-old beard that has a former hockey player attached to it?

Yes you do. Some teams give a player a tryout with no intent of ever signing him. I'm sure the Flames have done it a couple of times.
It's nice to create competition in camp so that some guys on the bubble have a bit more urgency to show that they belong.

I noticed Josh Brooks was removed as a Flames PTO. I assume it is because he signed an AHL deal, although he is still technically an NHL free agent.
I think PTOs can also be used to build relationships with agents. Give a guy's client a PTO. Even if you don't intend on signing them, it is still a showcase for the rest of the league, and if they have a decent tryout, another team could sign them. An agent might be more inclined to push clients your way in the future.

I see no reason to sign Thornton. He can't play anymore.
Now I do think you have to acknowledge the kind of coach that Sutter is and he can wear on players. I have no idea how things really go behind the scenes but having veterans than can be the buffer between Sutter and players could be good. As well as veterans that reinforce his message so that the team doesn't tune him out after a while.
