Hahaha I'm with you, I'm one of those that never heard of Weegar before the trade; had to look him up. Had no idea he netted 44 points and was one of their better defencemen. I had to remind myself that I know less about the rest of the league than I used to - time to do some refresher research on who's on what team. So many new names than just 5 years ago too.

With little to no PP time/points. Could’ve easily had 50 or even 60.

I am so curious about how this deal actually came together. Did Zito just basically blow his wad with the offer when Treliving told him that Tkachuk was on the market and interested in signing with Florida? Was it Treliving who set the price at the start (Huberdeau + Weegar + pick + prosoect) when negotiations started? It would have been amazing to have been on those calls.

I'm really hoping it's what I picture ...
Treliving just not responding as Zito just keeps adding another piece to the deal in a panic over the silence.
"How about Huberdeau?"
"Ok fine ... Huberdeau and a 1st"
"I'm not adding to that ..."
"Ok fine Cole Schwindt, I'll add Schwindt"
"We done"
"You there?"
"Ok .. a first ... hey when's our next first? ... 25? maybe 25? Ok we'll add the 2025"

3 pp points and a total of 53 mins on the PP all year.
Tanev got 20 mins on the PP last year.
Kylington got 78 mins

Me too. I recall somewhere that Huberdeau and Weegar were rumoured to be available because Zito might not be able to sign them. But I can't remember where i saw that.

I’m sure there were lots of “Hey Bill can I put you on hold for a sec?, I really need to take this call from Doug Armstrong” “Hey Bill can I put you on hold for a sec?, I really need to take this call from Tom Fitzgerald” “Hey Bill can I put you on hold for a sec?, I really need to take this call from Jim Nill”
“While you’re waiting, give that Weegar inclusion a bit more thought.”

For those of us who don't get more than basic T.V. the Panthers can be a hard team to watch. I remember watching Weegar thinking he looked like a 2020's Dave Babych with his mustache.
He did look to be struggling in the playoffs. Might have been banged up. From what I remember of the regular season at the end when I caught the odd Panthers game, he seemed to always be on the ice. Maybe the playoff role switch put him out of sync too. From what I remember regular season Weegar was everywhere on the ice at both ends. Playoff Weegar looked to be on the defensive all the time and struggling. But that is with very limited viewing. I'd still describe Weegar as a big time unknown for myself.

Advanced stats show that Weegar was really good in the playoffs.
Barkov, Huberdeau, Reinhart, Giroux and Ekblad's numbers don't look so good though

Panthers fans soured on him during the playoffs. Made some really big mistakes which cost a few goals. But I also think it was the mark of a rookie coach not knowing how to adjust Weegar’s game when it stopped working.

I suspect Zito had to move out salary to cover signing Tkachuk, probably already knew he couldn't sign Huberdeau and Weegar so they were the natural fit. Still not sold on Weegar, let's see what he does in the Flames system.

It is seemingly increasingly unlikely that Weegar signs an extension. Surely someone has inside info? I havent seen anything in awhile..

It's likely more abnormal that a pending UFA on a new team signs an extension before a single day of training camp with his new team. Give it a bit more time, and I'm sure a deal can be had. If not there will be other opportunities.

After the summer that Brad's had, I find it hilarious that people are still worried about anything at all. I can't wait for camp and the season to start.

Would be nice not to worry about anything
But that would also be boring

One guy I truly knew nothing of before the deal was Schwindt. I'm surprised that so many on CP knew the guy so well before the trade and talks about him making the Flames NHL roster started within days of the actual trade. Not sure if this is similar to some penciling Valimaki into the Top 4 in the first season he came to North America (hopefully not, considering how off those projections were) or if people actually followed Schwindt before the trade.

I'm not worried he'll sign before the season, brad will make that happen, however not being worried if he doesn't sign and plays the season as an upcoming UFA would be weird.
I don't think there's any chance Brad will play out another season with a star player on an expiring contract. My guess is that he's dealing with a bit of an oddball agent and is just using the weeks leading up to the season to grind him down a bit.
Agent probably wants 7-8 years at $7mil. Brad likely wants 6 years and under $7mil. I bet they'll settle on either
6 years around 7 mil or
7 years 6.5 mil
