I know you were being sarcastic. But what is there to be sarcastic about? Seems as if you want to crap all over this one statistic because it doesn't tell the whole story. Well, one statistic by itself never does.

No more orange Julius rumors on Weegar signing? Getting close to the season start.

It's a holiday today.
So I think Weegar is extended today.

Hopefully they’ll get him signed before the puck drops on the regular season. Don’t want this dragging out and becoming a distraction for the team.

Shouldn’t be that big a distraction for a pro team. He is signed for this year, after all.

Maybe the Flames are hoping he really brings it in a contract year.

I wonder if the Flames want to see Weeger play for them before offering a long term lucrative contract. I remember several supposedly top defensive defensemen coming to the Flames and it not really working out. Steve Chiasson, Jay Bowmeister, and Travis Hamonic would be three that fit that role.

I don’t think anyone would describe Weegar as a defensive defenseman. Same with Bouwmeester

Huge risk in playing that game. By the time the may be comfortable signing him to an extension, the closer he may be to testing UFA. Plus, his price will have gone up.

Yup. It's not like they aren't familiar with him as a player - that's what their scouts are for, and that's why they had him included in the deal.
His price isn't going to change significantly between now and Christmas, if you think he's part of your long term plans, get him signed. Trying to get cute with it is more likely than not to burn you.

The only risk is on the player side - he’d have to win the Norris to fundamentally alter was he’s likely to get as a UFA, and he’s one meh season away from costing himself anywhere from $25/40M - the much more accomplished John Klingberg is playing for the Ducks on a 1/$7M deal.
Secure the bag. 8 years @ $6.5M is $52M. What better omen do you want.

I’m sure it’s only a distraction for the media and fans.

Klinberg is also a -53 his last three seasons, might be part of the reason team weren't backing up the truck.

The only ones this is potentially a distraction for would be Weegar and Treliving.
It's fairly common where you will see a deal get signed a few days into camp, once the player arrives, settles in and has a chance to have a few more face to face meetings with the team.

I don't see a #3-4 defenceman on the last year of a contract being any kind of a distraction at all. Maybe he'll have a great contract year. I don't see any pressure for Treliving to over-pay to keep him or trade him. He was basically a bonus piece in that trade, and if we just one year out of him in a year that we are going for it, then that worked out fine. We can use his cap space to replace him next year if we don't sign him.

Totally. But an injury or a poor season in Will do just as much to tank Weegar’s value. He’d need to have a season for the ages to get into that $8M range.
But he blows a knee or gets concussed, that all goes away. He doesn’t have the track record to get that $50M without another rock solid campaign.

I think this is a massive underestimation of what Weegar brings to this team. It will be unsurprising if he is the Flames's top defenseman this season.

You vastly underrate the player Weegar has become and the impact he has made the past handful of seasons.
Five on Five over the past two years Weegar ranks among defensemen
6th in ES scoring
1st in Takeaways
15th in Hits
16th in TOI
18th in Blocks
5th in CF%
4th in SF%
19th in GF%
8th in xGF%
7th in SCF%
13th in HDCF%
He's far closer to being a #1 defender than he is a #4 - and it's certainly a safe bet to call him an established top pairing defender at this point.

You’re really underselling Weegar here. He’s a bonafide top pairing defenseman and FAR from a bonus piece in that trade. Won’t be surprising to see him as the Flames best defenseman after the season

GOAT!

It's so weird how I'd never heard of this guy before the trade. Like I legit thought he and Schwindt were just throw-ins (1 roster, 1 prospect) with Huberdeau. I would have been happy with just that trade, but then the comments started to trickle in about how good Weegar actually is, and I was like... wait a minute, we got Huberdeau and an actual player?! Like, not a depth throw-in but a top pairing D?
I imagine this is how a lot of teams would react if it was reversed and they were getting Tkachuk and Andersson. "Oh nice we got Tkachuk! Oh, and some random throw-in, cool. Wait, what? Andersson is a top-pair D?!"
It's kinda wild when you think about all the popular good players that get all the media coverage outside their local markets, but how every team has like one or two other guys who would be just as coveted(?) by other fan bases if they had any outside media coverage.
Mind you, I'm sure there are a pile of fans who knew exactly who Weegar was when we got him lol.
