So if I'm Mangiapane I'm going "I'll take the 3 x $5.8M, or something like 8 years x $6.5-7.0M"

I could see why Flames might want to take the shorter option here too.
This.

A couple additional years over 3 would likely have been the most expensive years, as it would have pushed his UFA into an age that was to his disadvantage. 5 years would not have been a simple little bump. So Matt is correct, it was likely 3 or 8. 8-years likely would have had a smaller AAV than 5-years simply due to the age Magiapane would be at when the 5 year contract would end.

Was just about to post exactly this.

I am curious where the 8yr numbers would have been. I’d guess flames wanted 8x6.25 and Mangi wanted at least 8x7.

I much prefer this value now and the additional flexibility in 2-3 years (trade or extend)

I have enjoyed listening to these guys discussing the Flames news.

If 8 x $6.5MM was on the table vs the 3 x $5.8MM that got done, then it most certainly would have been signed. For an extra $700k just the escalation of cap alone makes that a value contract.

Do you honestly think he was willing to sign a 6-8 year deal in this ballpark and Brad was like "nah"

I bet this is one of the best contracts in the NHL the next 3 years...so yeah credit where credit is due
It’s definitely still a decent contract. However, I don’t think there’s any reason he’s worth more then Kempe this off-season. Especially when he signed for one less year.

To add to this, getting a big contract at 32, can be more than just tough, but impossible. There are some players who play well at 33+, but most are either on very small contracts ($2 million or less) or out of the league. If Mangiapane goes from a 30 goal/60 point player to a 20 goal/40 point player who's lost a step, at 32+, then he's going to have a tough time finding any contract.

It's no-man's land for a forward:

3yr+ x 3M+ age 32-34 since 2014:

Nicklas Bäckström 32
Blake Wheeler 32
Jay Beagle 32
Tyler Bozak 32
Paul Stastny 32
Alexander Steen 32
Frans Nielsen 32
David Backes 32
Jason Spezza 32
Mike Cammalleri 32
Patrick Eaves 33
Claude Giroux 34
Joe Pavelski 34

I think some of these might have been signed early to kick in a year later. A few guys like Wheeler and Backstrom still hit homerun deals, but there's also some buyout/toxic deals in there. GMs might be getting slightly less dumb.

I'm not sure how many other quality forwards hit UFA at that age and had to settle for smaller deals, but I'd guess lots.

"Obviously I'm excited that we could get a three-year deal done,'' Mangiapane said Wednesday during an appearance at the Boots and Hearts Barn Burner charity hockey game. "I was getting nervous with the hearing approaching. I wanted a longer-term deal. I wanted to stay in Calgary longer. Obviously we've got some new pieces and some guys left, but I'm still excited about our team. I think we can be in the mix to finish atop the division. I really do.

"I know there's been a lot of talk whether guys want to play in Canada or not. Well, I love playing in Canada. I love being in a Canadian market. I'm from Canada (Bolton, Ontario), grew up in Canada, and being in Calgary, it's like a second home to me. I love the city, I love the organization and my teammates are great. It's a great place to play hockey."

“I think our whole team needs to be maybe 10 per cent better and just grow and build off the season that we had last year,” said Mangiapane, pleased to be celebrating a new contract rather than preparing for an arbitration faceoff later this week. “Yeah, we lost two good players, but we didn’t lose our whole team. I think the majority of guys are still here, and the majority of guys that were here were successful because of who they are. I feel if everyone is putting in the work and growing, this could be a very special year for us.

“Obviously, some guys are no longer with us, but I think we still have a good team and we’re still going to be competing every game to win,” Mangiapane said. “We did gain a couple good players, as well. There’s room for everyone to grow. I look at it as, ‘Why can’t guys step up and play into the person that they want to be?’ ”

I 100% agree with these quotes. A lot of Flames fans and other "experts" thinking the Flames won't be as good next year. We lost 2 good players, but we also gained 2 good players. I am also hoping Pelletier/Phillips and Ruzicka can make strides this coming season, and perhaps Monahan can be at least 50% better. I hope with the Flames affiliate in Calgary the *knock on wood* injury bug won't be that bad this coming year. We were really fortunate last season in that regard.

I also feel the only reason we got burned in the playoffs, is because for some reason we couldn't defend the rush plays the Oilers did over and over. I mean that is their bread and butter, but somehow we couldn't clue into that. Now we have to endure a year of Oilers fans thinking their team is greater than ours.
As for Americans not wanting to play in a Canadian market. We all knew the bridge deal Tkachuk signed, he wanted to peace out somewhere else. Also Johnny would barely ever wear Flames apparel outside a Flames game. He loved showing off his American bias even in post game interviews. You never seen this from Hanifin. So the writing was on the wall for both of them.

I really like this player a lot. I like the way he competes and just the type of person he seems to be. Very likeable. I hope he can elevate his game this year. I would have been more upset if we lost him than Gaudreau or Tkachuk. Real team guy. The boys are gone and he is one of the men that are left to take this team to the next level.
