Not that spicy a hot take. Hanafin is still young and has the skill set to take another big step.
I am amazed at the D corps Treliving has built, especially considering Feaster left him with zero defense prospects. You've got Tanev as the veteran leader at the height of his powers with everyone else under 30, on value contracts, and still improving.

Hanifin has a career year, wins Norris then leaves Calgary to play for a team closer to home for less money making the city look bad and leaving flames fans miserable again. The script basically writes itself

No kidding, JBo take 2 strides and everyone else is on 4. Long legs and has probably been power skating since he was 5.

Serious question: do you think Andersson and Kylington 'are what they are'? Or do they have room for growth still?

The Norris will be owned by Makar, Seider, Fox, with a sprinkling of Josi and Hedman for the next decade. All of our D could play out of their minds, and still not win it.
Hanifin could stand to be more physical, but he's otherwise a prototype of the modern defenseman-big and fast (probably fastest on the team after Kylington), moves the puck quickly through transition, covers the angles, and has a good stick. No doubt he's our #2 behind Weegs. Would be nice if Tre left the top 4 alone, at least.

Seriously, before Gio won it, did anyone, including you, ever thought he could win it? Never say he is what he is. OBTW, What is he exactly?

Hanifin's like Jaybo. Underappreciated when he's here, but after Jaybo left there was a huge hole and Flames fans wished they had a big, minute eating, smooth skating, all purpose D.

As I recall, a big part of the dissatisfaction with Bouwmeester was that a certain set of fans saw that he was tall, and decided that therefore he had a moral obligation to be a face-puncher. Otherwise sane people turned into Don Cherry when talking about this topic.

Bouwmeester was also here for coach Brent Sutter. Every other coach after him would have utilized Bouw's skillset better offensively IMO.

People who actually watched Bouwmeester knew about his contributions on the ice, without flash, or physicality. He was a valuable player, no doubt. And I agree, Brent ate into his offence a great deal. Didn’t he have one year with the Flames after Brent left, where his numbers went way up?
Anyway, same stratosphere with Hanifin. He’s quietly very reliable and effective.

I was told by people on this board that Hanifin was what he was going to be after his first 2 seasons here which clearly was not true.
I think the Norris is a stretch but no reason he can’t continue to get better

I actually thought they expected him to be a very flashy offensive D and put up huge points because he made a fair bit of money. Also not his game.

Not sure why you guys are reminiscing about Bouwmeester like he was mistreated or something. The team did not make the playoffs once with Bouwmeester on the roster. He was a mediocre Flame and deserved the criticism he got even if some fans were naive about expecting him to be a bruiser or whatever. he made 6.68 million in 2009 with a 56.8 million cap, and didn't hit 30 points once. that stinks. he provided poor value

Similar points to Gio all those years. So obviously Gio was a crap Dman as well.
I’d say the fact that Jaybo went from the Flames to the Blues and immediately had success (despite still not scoring) says more about the Flames than him.
Your post is an example of what I was saying. You think to earn his salary he had to be a big points guy. He never was. Yet he was a Olympic gold medalist and a Stanley cup winner. He was also an All Star while on the Flames.

Jay fricken Bouwmeester was one of the best skaters this league ever saw. He in fact anchored the Olympic blueline on the Gold Medal team in Sochi where his skating absolutely shone on the bigger ice surface. He was partnered with Doughty!
He WON a cup and again was anabsolute anchor on the the St Louis blueline and without Jaybo, no cup for St. Lou.
Under rated because he didn't fit the pre determined mold and the Flames of the period were clueless. Jaybo had the last laugh haters with a well deserved Gold Medal and a well deserved Stanley Cup Ring.
Of course...it's just my opinion.

Absolutely. It's because he is boring that we under appreciate him. IF (and we don't) had a younger prospect/player ready to step into a number 4/5 roll (sadly Valimaki was supposed to be this player) than I could see trading him for a like player of his age and better calibre forward, but at this time our prospects are forward heavy, and I think we hope that 2 of Pelletire/Zary/Coronato take the steps of becoming a middle six with top 6 potential.
Our wild card is still Dube where if he can continue his production from the second half of the season with new opportunities presented in our rearrangement of our top six, then it would be silly to move a D man.
