From what I understand, Weegar’s agent is actually his uncle and doesn’t have a realistic view or knowledge base on where the market is. Could take a while.

Interesting, and just because I would like to read the blurb where you saw this, can you please link it? Or if this is a verbal thing that you just heard, can you state where and from whom?
Thanks!

Weegar has said all the right things since he was acquired.
He just saw the much more accomplished John Klingberg have to settle for 1 year $7M from the Ducks.
His buddy Huberdeau committed to eight years, and the team signed Kadri.
He’ll be signed well before camp. He’s not in a position to be gambling a $50M contract.

Yeah, while it doesn't state the family relationship, Weegar's agent is an Ottawa lawyer, in a 6 person shop and not someone with a sports agency. While he's a registered NHL agent, he only has the one NHL contract (Weegar's current one) listed on Puckpedia.

I've heard from my source that he may have fired that agent (uncle) a year and a half ago. Not confirmed but there was at least some frustration with his last contract

Yeah, sounds like negotiating his last contract was a pain too. From 2020:
Quote:
“We’re disappointed with how things have gone, to this point,” Ebbs told TFP on Monday.
“It’s been disappointing that they haven’t really been able to get anything accomplished.”
Weegar, an Ottawa native, made $1.6 million last season and is looking for a bump in pay. While Ebbs would not divulge specifics of his negotiations with the Panthers and new-GM Bill Zito, he mentioned “we have a pretty good idea what the number is.”
|
So he ended up with more than double his cap hit from $1.6mil to his current $3.25mil
$6.5-7mil seems like a no brainer, that’s at least double his previous AAV.
Puckpedia lists Ebbs as Weegar’s agent and he is indeed his uncle. Not sure if that info is updated if he did indeed fire him.

It also didn’t hurt that his agent Matthew Ebbs was also his uncle and had a good relationship with Halifax Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell.

I think it comes in at 7x7 from what I've been hearing, seems about in the middle of "ideal" 7x$6, and sergachev overpay 7x$8+.

Did Weegar get any Norris votes last season?

If Sergachev at $8.5 is an overpay, what's Nurse?!

4 votes, none higher than 4th place. Kinda hard when Ekblad got 74.

He got one 4th and one 5th place vote: https://www.hockey-reference.com/awa...ting-2022.html
Tanev was the only Flame to get any, and he had a single 5th place vote.
Weegar had 28 votes and finished 8th in the Norris voting in 2020-21: https://www.hockey-reference.com/pla...weegama01.html

A straight up albatross contract. I will be surprised if he makes it halfway through that term without a buyout or payment for another team to take it on.

Nice find.
EDIT: i'm like 8th to post that Ebbs is a lawyer with no NHL clients.

So no different than anyone on this message board who is convinced they absolutely know what a fair contract is for a player?

He's supposed to be his agent. He's making money probably to know that kind of stuff

While I was initially shocked when I saw that contract, TB has shown they absolutely know what they are doing. He's only 24 , so there is no reason to think it will age badly. In fact, as the cap goes up, it should look better later on.

Vinny01 was talking about Darnell Nurse's contract.

For a guy with no other NHL portfolio, I don't think the difficulty is knowing the marketplace and contracts - that's researchable. What he doesn't have is a rapport with GM based on lots of contacts on multiple players and/or being brought into the business by a more senior agent.
I'd bet he's never met Treliving before this summer.
