Look at Tampa. They have had guys like Maroon and Perry on their 4th line. They still fill a checking roll, but they are capable of producing. Same goes for Toronto. Simmonds and Aube-Kubel can actually produce.

The NHL still has a lot of parity. The difference between 10 point 4th liners and 25 point 4th liners can't be understated.

Yes, the primary purpose of the fourth line is to wear down opponents. But they have to be able to produce as well. There's a reason that guys like Raitis Ivanans (18 points in 282 games) are always on losing teams.
Well, TB used Perry on the third line for much of the season, for one thing. For another, you are cherry picking. They also used Bellemare, Nash, etc on the 4th line.

The Avs had a 4th line of Helm, Meyers and Megna in their last game. Count the goals.

Other possibility nobody has brought up is if Weegar decides not to resign long term in Calgary. Do the Flames move him for a top six winger?

This is what I was about to say.

If you want to trade a top 4 D in order to get a top line RW, and Weegar hasn't signed yet, you trade Weegar. No question about it.

Imagine what the D looks like if you trade Hanifin, Weegar doesn't sign, and Tanev's shoulder is never the same. Suddenly you've gone from among the best in the league, to disaster next season

A top line RW for Weegar would be okay, particularly if that player came with term or could be signed.

Calgary needs to decide if we are building to handle the Oilers, and their ability to carve last years blueline, or the NHL. The Oilers seem to be a fairly unique NHL team with a crazy one-two punch and zero depth.

I think if Weegar doesn't sign, the best move against the other top NHL teams is a top 6 forward and keeping Hanfin.

Just saw on Twitter Stastny is signing in Carolina. He was one of the final UFA’s the Flames could have still been in the mix for

Isn't building a team that is deep on C and D the key to beating every team in the NHL? That seems to be the plan here and it also seems to work on the Oilers.

Again, really hard to gauge if this account is bogus or not, but his timestamps beat Friedman, Lebrun, etc for big name signings earlier in the summer by many hours.

Apparently that account had been right a couple times in regards to the Flames.

Maybe Stastny was a domino GMs were waiting to fall before looking at the next depth options.

I'd still have Kessel at the top of my list, personally.

Meh, I'd pass on Rodrigues.

Rodrigues gives me Dominik Simon vibes. Maybe the Crosby factor? Though the majority of his points came with Crosby out of the lineup I think? I don't know. I wouldn't be upset to see him signed. Wouldn't bother me at all really, but I'm not sure he moves the needle.

Rodrigues’ strengths are in transition and he is good at gaining the offensive zone. I think he is a great fit, and I would slot him in on the 2nd RW spot.

The last couple of tweets as it relates to the flames are off. Maybe there is still something there with Lucic and the Bruins? The tweet did seem non-committal

The account got the AAV right for Kadri but also had him going to the Islanders.

Either way Rodrigues would be a solid add to the teams bottom 6 and if it went through I believe would break up the Backlund-Coleman pairing and I would run with the following

Huberdeau-Lindholm-Toffoli
Mangiapane-Kadri-Coleman
Dube-Backlund-Rodrigues
Lucic-Rooney-Lewis

I would consider swapping things around as well with Toffoli on the second line and loading up the top line with Mangiapane so each of the top 3 lines had a right shot

Yes, if I recall correctly, Rodriguez played quite well when Crosby and Malkin were out of the lineup. Kept the Pens afloat when the team could have just cratered.

Simon, on the other hand, completely relied on Crosby.

I'm always wary of a guy with just one stellar season. Adjusting to the change of scenery could bump him back to his prior production level, and then he's just another replaceable depth piece.

For cheap as a last minute signing I wouldn't mind it though. There's always the chance that it actually was a break out year and he can continue doing those good things here in the middle 6.

Kessel I'd have way more confidence in.

I think of the free agent forwards left, Rodrigues is probably the better fit with a Sutter coached team. More versatility being able to play in C or RW. Can play on any line. Coach will trust him in defensive situations.

Kessel would have been the more fun target for fans. Potential high offensive upside and by all accounts a fun personality.
