i've talked about one of my customers in the past and how he is a HUGE oilers fan... and i mean HUGE!!! we were chatting this afternoon about the upcoming season and he said to me, "it pains me to admit it, but the flames are an even better team than last season".
this guy is also very well connected within 'nhl circles'. i sent him an email on iggy's birthday asking him to text iggy 'happy birthday from a huge flames fan' - and he does.
i do the same thing on the anniversary of the bruins taking out the canucks in the finals - just asking him to send mark recchi a 'high 5' from me - and he does! ha!
he's gotten me TONS of stuff signed by current and past nlhers. so all this to say we often talk about hockey stuff and he is regularly 'in the know' when it comes to stuff going on - so i asked him about smitty. i guess his groin is absolutely toast. could he play - maybe, but with 1 year left he's looking at quality of life after the game and wants to be able to enjoy it. he (smitty) knows too many guys who are retired who have had multiple surgeries after retirement and they just never fully recover so LTIR it is for him.
This groin injury…are you saying that he was playing with it all season?

That is interesting info on Smith. Thanks for sharing.
So it appears they're gambling on a Campbell/Skinner combo then? That could go any number of directions.. mainly different variations of "south".

very possibly. the thing is, if you keep re-aggravating/re-injuring it, it never really heals.
i've played goal for 15 years. i've pulled my groin twice playing and it's brutal! it's been at least 6 years or so since the second time i really hurt it and i've found that i can tweak it doing the most mundane thing. earlier this year all i did was pivot on my one foot and bam - the pain in my groin was brutal and i was hobbling around for days.
my guess is he's at the point where he says 'screw it - i'll just take the final year off'. it's also one of those injuries were it's kind of hard for a doc to say "you're fine to play". i know with my groin pulls after a couple weeks i could walk/jog fine.... but drop into a butterfly - not a chance. so you look fine, but really you can't play goal.

They aren't. They would have to move out equal money to bring someone in.
Kane even at half retained would require a third team retaining cap, as the only players the Oilers can afford to send out would be Yamamoto/Puljujarvi at $3.
If anything they need a D-man.
I think this is just Oilers media trying to generate clicks in the dog days of summer.
Exactly.
Also, Puljujarvi and Yamamoto have zero value to Chicago, as they would be late 20s before the Hawks come out of the rebuild. They want young prospects who will actually help the rebuild.
And Kane, retained, is the most valuable asset out there right now.
If the Oilers actually wanted to get this done, the assets that would interest the Hawks would be:
1) Bouchard
2) Holloway
3) 2023 1st
4) Broberg
I t would take at least 3 of those, or the first 2 at the very least.
And they would still have to find a way to create the space (i.e. send Puljujarvi and Yamamoto somewhere)

Stauffer was suggesting the Oilers can get Patrick Kane for Puljuarvi or Foegele, 2023 1st, a prospect not named Broberg, Holloway, Schaefer, or Bourgault with the Blackhawks eating 50% salary.
And they will give another team a 3rd to eat another 50% for 75% retained.

While a stretch, I think its within the realm of possibility, with the biggest issue not being the trade but Kane choosing to waive to go to Edmonton.
The 3rd for $2.6M cap eating seems low, but its honestly not that far off. A 2nd would cover that easily given there is no no-movement clause at work for that 25% like we had with Monny- a 3rd is possibly attainable but a stretch.
The largest issue with the trade itself is I think the prospect has to be better though (i.e. one of the names listed) - Chicago has now till the trade deadline to drive prices up. However, if they moved on the prospect restrictions he put in, I think this is a done deal if Kane waived.

Kane's been a face of that franchise for a while. I would think the Hawks would want considerably more in return than 1st and junk. I just don't see the privilege of paying Foegele $6 million over the next two seasons as a sweetener in any trade. Nose licker has been available for three years now and would be more of a throw in than major asset.

My favorite delusion from this article is that Staples once again thinks that McDavid and Draisaitl would run their own lines. That lasts until the slightest adversity and then they're back on the same line. This stuff is utter nonsense.
The no goods are trying so hard to come up with something to counter what the Flames did this off season. Nobody is talking about them in Alberta. It's all about what Calgary has done and what an amazing job Calgary was able to do despite being dealt a bad hand.
This is a cry for "don't forget about us !" from the Edmonton media

Isn't Foegele only getting $2.75M? Anyway, he is an UFA in 2 years, I think you roll the dice on Puljujarvi if your Chicago.

Exactly, and by the deadline, almost every team can find a way to make the $5M work.
Price will be MUCH higher than what Stauffer is dreaming up

That is literally part of sports media job however? Their team's rival massively improves, you write an article of how to counter it.
