Well, that is just not true. Before Monanan started to incur multiple injuries he was a very good player, and had no problem "holding his own" both with and without Gaudreau. Those first five years he was in the NHL, Monahan was legitimately and widely regarded as one of the best young centres in the game.

Monahan put up points. But he was never more than a one-dimensional scorer. He couldn’t/wouldn’t back check, wasn’t very good at puck pressure or cycling, had no jam to his game, was poor at zone entries, and was never even considered for the PK. He had a good sense for getting open and a very good shot. Paired with one of the best stickhandlers and passers in the game, that made him a productive player.

He was a productive player before Gaudreau arrived, showing promise to be at least a top 6 player with character. IIRC, he was being touted as future captain material during his rookie season.

I'm old-school. To me, 91 is the number of an undrafted player on an amateur tryout who gets cut before the first scrimmage. It's the number you get when there are 90 other guys ahead of you in line.
