Wouldn't it be a rental to sign him for a single season now as well?

I just can’t see Kessel being a Sutter player. Sutter is all about conditioning and preparation, those just aren’t Kessel’s strong suits. I think his skill and production absolutely fit, I am just not sure the player himself would fit with the coach.

Yes, it's literally happening in this deal...FLA has a 1st pending to PHI that could be one of two years, so the 1st they sent us could bump a year, so that 1st sent to MTL has additional conditions.

Sutter is about effort and preparation. Just because Kessel is a little pudgy doesn’t mean he is not have great conditioning

I get that but I find it strange that he's left out of the equation - even without knowing the actual amount of his salary. I would think you would put him on the list with no amount showing.

I would question if Kessel has any interest in coming to a pressure packed market again for a marginal NHL salary. He got burned in Toronto, has won his cups…..I’d guess he’s looking for a low pressure market or retirement. For a guy like him taking a 1year contract at min $ plus Coach Sutter sounds like a lot of work I’d guess.

I see us having 2-3 years before we need to blow things up. Spending the next 3 years 1st round picks on rentals is something I support.
Those 1st round picks have zero value to this window.

Thanks, I just looked that up on CapFriendly.
If their 2024 1st round pick is top 10, they owe Philadelphia the 2025 1st round pick that they subsequently traded to Calgary? Where in the conditions of the Tkachuk trade does it talk about what will happen if they owe Philadelphia that pick?

I bet Rodrigues is looking for some term though, career year with 43 points, RHS plays center and RW

I'm hesitant on Rodriguez. Something something Crosby effect something something.

Huberdeau ($10.5) - Lindholm ($4.85) - Toffoli ($4.25)
Mangiapane ($5.8) - Kadri ($7) - Coleman ($4.9)
Pelletier ($.863) - Backlund ($5.35) - Dube ($2.3)
Rooney ($1.3) - Ruzicka ($.775) - ?
?
Hanifin ($4.95) - Andersson ($4.55)
Zadarov ($3.75) - Weegar ($7)
Kylington ($2.5) - Tanev ($4.5)
?
Markstrom ($6)
?
That's 4 roster spots to fill with $2.36M in cap-space on an $83.5M salary cap.
I don't imagine Vladar will be coming back on a cheap deal, so the cheapest our backup goalie would cost next year is Wolf's $.813, which would leave the Flames with $1.547M to fill in 3 roster spots - not possible.
Plenty can change, and I'm certainly not cheering for them to trade Hanifin - but there's some player still to come as far as exits are concerned (unless the salary cap bumps up more than the rumoured $1M), and if Hanifin could be moved now for a pending UFA/RFA that we don't have to worry about signing until next summer it would probably give the Flames more leverage next summer to make whatever moves are necessary.
|
Someone will have to go but if Hanifin does not resign next summer then we can trade him then. If he does I would start looking at any of the following:
Toffoli
Backlund
Dube
Mangiapane
Coleman.
IMO Dube vs Toffoli will be the decision. If Dube plays the same as always then they might move him and give AHL players a chance. IMO this isn't a huge loss.
The problem with dumping Toffoli is he is part of the savings to resign Hanifin and Lindholm.
I'm ok to trade Hanifin if we get a top end forward, other wise we might as well keep him for 1 more year

Kessel is a freak athlete there is no doubting that, but I think he has relied on that and maybe hasn’t put in the same effort others have, because he hasn’t had to. I just don’t think that would fit in with Sutter, nor do I think Kessel would be a fan of Sutter’s coaching style.

I almost wonder if Hanifin could make sense as a futures deal. Good prospect + 1st + 2nd. It immediately gives us cap-space this summer to go sign a good forward (or two) to 1-year deals (Stastny, Kessel, Milano), while replenishing some ammo spent on moving Monahan. It gives Kylington, Valimaki, Mackey, Meloche an opportunity to flourish during the regular season and if needed we can then spend something to add another defenceman at the deadline if needed.
To NJD: Noah Hanifin
To CGY: Shakir Mukhamadullin, 2024 1st, 2023 2nd.
Sets up NJD on the LHD with Hanifin and Hughes going forward. Gives the Flames a 1st, a 2nd, and a good RHD prospect (something we lack).
I imagine like you mentioned, this is a "next year problem" but if they believe in Valimaki/Mackey/Meloche can develop and make an impact this season? Who knows.

It’s perfectly logical to think that. Many players past and present owe their existence to Crosby and Malkin. In Rodrigues’ case, it was a UFA year perhaps.
