A little annoying perhaps, but hardly disastrous.

Fast forward to future seasons. The Flames look like they're conference or Cup contenders and have cap space to acquire a deadline piece. Then we sit around and watch as their competitors improve themselves while they can't even appear to do anything. Maybe these future years are seller's markets with few teams already having given up on the season and that's the price for someone like, say, Artturi Lehkonen.
They should have forced Montreal to choose which pick they wanted and retained the flexibility to have options on decision making instead of giving up that ability.

Kessel is -81 the last four years.
He is the literal embodiment of empty calories at this point.
I’d still take him as a rental, but not for a full season.

No way Neal plays the way be did under Sutter. Probably would have been benched and, or in a lot better shape when the season started. Unfortunately we had a few guys that dictated the play and didn't always show up.

Because of some goofy conditions?
48 hours ago, they had 7 1sts worth of value between their future selections and their last three picks.
Florida doesn’t have a pick to bargain with until 2026.
That’s arduous.

While I don't dispute Kessel isn't a strong defensive player, his teams over the past four years have posted these goal differentials...
ARI 2021–22: Minus–106
ARI 2020–21: Minus–23 (in 56 games)
ARI 2019–20: Plus–8
PIT 2018–19: Plus–32
So he was on one pretty good Penguins playoff team, one decent Coyotes playoff team, and two really, really awful Coyotes teams, with the latest being apocalyptically terrible.

Powerplay Quarterback

Which type of player we need? Shooter, Passer or Defensive Forward.
It would be nice if we sign a bigger winger that can battle and shoot.
And I hope the player is good enough to be traded for a draft pick at the trade deadline if he won't succeed here.

In that scenario, they'd just trade a conditional 2025 or 2026 1st instead if they really coveted a player. I feel like this whole "disastrous" scenario is the epitome of making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I know, I just don’t think it impacts them making a big acquisition the way you’re worried it will.
Then again, if anyone here is gonna be overly sensitive about a butterfly effect…

I would rather sign someone for free now and let them acclimate to the team during camp than wait to pay for someone at the deadline and risk them not meshing (Jarnkrok).

Jarnkrok was fine. He was a meme of offensive inadequacy, but he was a perfectly cromulent veteran #4C PK guy.

I'm sure Treliving would prefer to sign someone now than have to make a mid-season trade, he's always said that he builds his teams in the summer.

Well, it isn't disastrous if you can have multiple conditions on the same pick. If that's true, thank you for teaching me. Has it ever been done before?

You'd take him as a rental, so flames would need to spend assets vs signing him as a UFA now for free?
