Fair point. We’ve seen that at the deadline a first and a second gets you something like Toffoli.
This team really wanted Kadri though.

I just don’t like the idea of moving a 1st to be able to sign Kadri to a $7x7. Whole point of overpaying in UFA is you don’t have to give up an asset to get the player, if you have to move a 1st anyways and still overpay on the contract then it’s not really a good deal IMO

This is kinda where I am. A lot depends on how Kadri pans out...but there are a lot of warning signs for why it may not (contract year, older guy playing physical game means more injury risk, playoff suspension risk, etc.).
If Kadri is great, it's all worth it. If he's bad, it obviously isn't. If he's just kinda average (most likely) then it's a more interesting question...
1. If Monny ends up spending lots of time on LTIR (I think of NYR buying out Lundqvist...and then him having a career ending medical issue before the next season even started) = regretful
2. If Monny bounces back to be reasonably productive - even if that means trading him mid-season for a conditional pick = probably regretful
3. If Monny is munching popcorn this feels a little better, though the cost to dump him would get cheaper with every passing day of the season.
The one other consideration is that Kadri is unlikely to fetch any assets near the end of his deal. The alternative path of waiting on Monny and using the 1st(+) on a different player with moderate term is that they could have salvage value down the road (e.g. Gourde, Dvorak, or even Josh Anderson who has 5 more yrs, but he'll be roughly Kadri's current age 4 yrs from now).
OTOH we get to integrate Kadri from day 1, and we're unlikely to find anyone else with a similar skillset.

Flow chart is slightly incorrect in that it's based on where Calgary and Florida finished in the standings but the reported conditions are based on where the picks are after the lottery.

Monny may well be healthy but can no longer play very well.
That’s actually the most likely scenario.
You just can’t place anyone you want on LTIR, the player needs to sign off on it.

Can the future consideration be Sean Monahan with Montreal retaining $5million in salary?

It depends on how you look at it. Between the 3 picks from 2015, Kylington was the first to play an NHL game, but he was the last to play a second NHL game.
Andersson was the first to truly become a fulltime NHLer.
Drafted: - Andersson: 2015, 53rd overall
- Kylington: 2015, 60th overall
- Mangiapane: 2015, 166th overall
First NHL Game: - Kylington: April 2016
- Andersson: April 2017
- Mangiapane: December 2017
Last Recall from AHL: - Andersson: October 2018
- Mangiapane: January 2019
- Kylington: April 2021
There are only 4 players left on the team who played the full 2018-19 season in Calgary: Backlund, Andersson, Lindholm, and Hanifin. Plus, another 4 who split the season between Stockton and Calgary: Mangiapane, Kylington, Dube, and Valimaki.

You do realize the season that Kadri just had is better than Monahan's best season playing on the top line with Gaudreau right? He is also a far better defensive player.

As a useful contributor that had not negative trade value.
Sad indeed.
Wanted the comeback but Kadri is a more realistic needle bumper to club. Gambling on hope isn't wise from a management perspective so I respect the move.

Imagine if Kadri was on a 7x7 somewhere else and conveniently asked for a trade at the time you cleared cap by Monahan going to LTIR. You’re not getting him for just a late 1st pick. You’re sending multiple picks and a prospect.

Yeah, bigrangy pointed that out. I didn't realize that Kylington was gone for 2 full seasons in between the debut game and the rest of his career.

Sure. Unlikely we're getting that version of Kadri...
...but hopefully we get enough flashes of it when it really counts.
Overall I think this is as good a bet as any, and this is absolutely the right year to push all-in from day 1.

At 7m. Down the road on the back half, that's a 4m contract in today's dollars. Not the worst.

If Monahan bounces back it would look absolutely terrible but unfortunately for Sean I don’t see that happening. Assuming he doesn’t it’s fine, a late first three years from now to dump cap and sign a better player isn’t the worst, even if I don’t really like Kadri.
