Price is going on LTIR, no real need to make a trade

So like one player in the last twenty years? And possibly one of the greatest centers of all time? Got it, thanks.

Yes. That is correct. What is your point?

If Monahan's hips hadn't given out on him, neither of todays moves would have been necessary, but they did and if we want to give it a go next season Tre couldn't sit back and hope Monahan miraculously rebounded back to 30 goal form.

Kudos to him for doing what had to be done.

A person could also wonder the same thing with several contracts this off season

(Gaudreau 29 signing 7 years, Huberdeau 29 signing 8 years, Malkin 36 signing 4 years, Letang 35 signing 6 years etc)....

Players want term

Its a risk for sure.....

More like Hall of Fame centers tend to age well…

I like the Kadri signing but not a fan of this trade. the conditions, the pick, I understand this must have been the best we could do but losing a 1st for 8 months of cap relief for a 27 year old who should be a playable asset is way too steep. He will probably actually bring them in a mid round pick at the deadline and this is going to hurt even more

OMG, the this must have been Murray Edwards to save a buck crap needs to stop.

We have an owner that invests heavily in this team year in and year out, why do we have fans that trot out this nonsense over and over again.............

Edmonton and Sabres are cashing in those cups every year. You need to pick a tear down and rebuild team to cheer for as the Flames will never do it. Coyotes and Blackhawks look good.

Cause it is more exciting than Lucic exercising his NTC

Maybe Lucic is here because that’s what Flames want. Or maybe he still gets moved.
Teams taking on full cap have said they want substantial assets. All rumours from talking heads on tv that the price was very high. If I had to guess it probably would have cost a 1st to move lucic also considering he had some sort of no trade clause. No contender is taking in $5 million plus of cap hit for a 4th liner.

In a hard-cap league, cap space is an asset. If you want usable cap space, you need to be willing to give up other assets. So today really boils down to a pretty basic transaction. The oft-injured Monaghan and a 1st for a completely signed Khadri. Smart GM’s do that trade 100% of the time. Haters gonna hate, but Tre has turned a potentially devastating off-season into one with a Flames team that is better than last year’s edition.

With moderate revenue growth of 5% per year, based on last season's $5.2 billion HRR, the cap should be around $120 million in 7 years.

That would make $7 million roughly the equivalent of Coleman & Lindholm's contracts this season.

That's a steep price to move Monahan. Glad that (if I followed the complexity of the conditions correctly) Flames are more likely to keep the higher pick.. I may have to re-read that to make sure.

I do think that Florida is likely to start going downhill by looking at their cap space, defence, and how many prospects and picks they have traded away. I really liked that 2025 conditional pick from them. Flames have a chance to keep it still (again, I think!).

Treliving is definitely going all-in here. I was 100% fine with a rebuild, and I am 100% fine for going for it too. I just didn't want to spend picks and just spinning your wheels forever. I believe the Flames are a contender - as long as these pieces work. If not, well, in 2 or 3 years, the rebuild will commence. Hopefully the Flames will win 2 or 3 cups by then It will at least be incredibly interesting to see how successful this group is now.

All depends on if he'd waive for a team that would take him. If he didn't want to move then he basically makes himself a list of 10 contenders.

You can criticize Edwards for how he's negotiating for the arena, but you can't criticize him for not spending money on the actual hockey team. The Flames constantly spend to the cap year after year. I can't even remember the last time Flames had any significant sort of cap space remaining. If anything, he's the opposite of cheaping out on spending on players.

You can’t sign Kadri if you don’t move Monahan

I don't like the part that if we don't end up with Florida's 2025 pick and the Flames pick is a top 10 pick in 2025 because we sucked, saved for it being 1st overall, Montreal would get our pick. It is so complicated to protect us from losing a top pick and then this fairly adverse situation could occur which seems incongruent to the rest of the terms. WTF.

TLDR: if we don't have Florida's 2025 pick, then the habs could get our 2025 pick if its 2nd to 10th
