No they weren't.

ERA, FIP and xFIP were all career bests last season

Lowest BB/9 of his career, lowest HR/9 of his career, 2nd best GB% of his career.

4.1 fWAR was the second best of his career and certainly not part of a "3 or 4 year down trend"

It's like this team needs a big shakeup trade in the offseason like those deals between 90 and 91 seasons which modified the makeup of the team.

As others note, the team is way too right handed hitting heavy, and has no impact left handed bats. Maybe they can trade Bo and another guy to find their new Robbie Alomar to stir the top of the lineup.

I was kind of hoping they'd package up Bo with some prospects to nab Soto.

Missed that boat.

Because he was really good last year, arguably his best pro season, and really good after the trade as well.

His Baseball savant page has a lot of red slowly turning blue. It's not a super deep dive by me, but the colour changes are usually a decent indicator.

Ok this is just stupid, Chapman is leading off? Find a long term solution and quit experimenting. No metric in baseball has Chapman as a lead off candidate.

Tapia profiles as a much more natural lead off hitter. Chapman is an all or nothing type of guy and I don’t get why he’d ever be up there.

White is the same thing.

I’ve already discussed why I think this lineup, while on paper looks really strong, is less than the sum of its parts. There just isn’t balance there. You need quality left handed batters to force pitchers (especially right handed pitchers) to throw their entire arsenal of pitches.

While I hope you are right, I don’t see a team with such glaring holes as a legitimate playoff team.
Sorry, but I had to bring this post up again. ERA is now below 3 and just threw 6 innings without allowing a baserunner.

I know Stripling doesn't have the pedigree from previous years, but he's figured something out this year and is a legitimate middle rotation guy. If Berrios starts to find his previous form a little more often this team has 4 very good starting pitchers. I don't think they're as bad off as you all make them sound.

He’s done fantastically well this year (especially today) but so far the team hasn’t shown that they want him to be stretched out more than 5-6 innings and prefer not to have him face the order more than twice. I’d love to see him become a guy that you are comfortable throwing into the 7th or 8th inning like you’d hope that your 3rd starter could buy so far the team doesn’t seem ready to consistently give him that freedom. Until they do that, it’s hard for me to see him as a third starter.

Yeah, but nobody consistently pitches into the 7th or 8th inning these days, and most teams avoid going through the order a 3rd time. It's a little unfair to expect that from him.

They’re going to waste this fantastic start and lose, aren’t they?

The Jays have basically capped Stripling in a way that they haven’t historically capped their third starter like Berrios. Berrios has been allowed to pitch until he’s running into issues. Stripling is removed at 80ish pitches and/or as soon as he gets to the third time into the batting lineup. Maybe it’s unfair but until he is allowed to be fully stretched out, it’s hard for me to see him as a #3.

The Blue Jays make another mediocre starter look like a Cy Young guy.

Some clutch hits finally.

Hopefully the bullpen doesn't #### the bed now.

I just love Springer's energy and competitiveness. I just wish he could stay healthy.

LOL, Kirk with the double to score two, but my favorite part is watching him running the bases with his tummy sticking out.
