I kind of like that the first is farther out.

Lots can change in the NHL in 3 years and that Florida team might not be as good by then.

They have very few picks to upgrade the team, don't have a lot of cap space to add, and guys like Barkov / Reinhart will be entering their 30s in 3-4 years. I'm intrigued that that roster looks like without Coach Q as well.

I think there is a decent chance the Flames could get a top 10 pick from Florida in 2025 or 2026.

Lets hope this forces the GM's hand with the 4th liners. As the roster gets more top heavy they are going to have to start graduating more AHL players or cheap UFA players (they kind of did that in free agency this season) to fill out the roster.

I wonder if the deal is done, they're just waiting for him (and possibly Huberdeau) to get into town before they announce it?

That's just Monny and Lucic who are off the books next season. Lost of easy fillers in line.

Steinberg basically said it can be taken to the bank because his sources say there is a real desire by both sides to get a deal done but he made it sound like they still had to work it out. He reiterated how much Weegar wants to be here more than once so it is just a matter of making something work for both sides

The evolution of this trade for me (likely all of us)

1. What?
2. Oh they're UFAs ...
3. They can move them for more stuff!
4. But what if they sign?
5. Hoping one signs ... then it's a great deal
6. Worried they keep both of them, then don't deal them at the deadline and they walk.
7. Huberdeau signs! Can't lose now!
8. Weegar likely to sign
9. How the hell did this all happen?

I did an actual, cartoon style set down my phone and rub my eyes to then pick it up and look again when I read the trade thread title on CP. Couldn't believe it all. Still find it hard to believe. I think Bill Zito is a moron.

I mean even if we couldnt sign them they would probably bring in multiple 1sts/2nds at the deadline as rentals. The trade makes no sense lmao

Disagree. I mean if I'm being honest if someone came up to me a couple of months ago and said "Tkachuk for Weegar 1 for 1" I'd look at them like they had a turnip for a head. He helps make up sone of the talent deficit but he doesn't get us there by himself. I'll buy Huberdeau replaces Gaudreau but we're still behind where we were last year. Need another forward.

Comparing the return of this trade vs the supposed offer from St. Louis makes me very happy.

Do we know the offer? Friedman said the offer Rutherford first reported involving Tarasenko was not correct (Blues were shopping Tarasenko and Scandella to anyone to clear space).

Rutherford later said he heard an offer of Kyrou, Krug and a 1st was made, but I'm not sure that was backed up by anyone else.

I break it down as:

Gaudreau -> signed Huberdeau
Tkachuk -> (hopefully) signed Weegar, 2025 first, b-level prospect (Schwindt), and cap space

I put that total return somewhere between not-bad to pretty, pretty good. Looking at it as a singular trade (just Tkachuk for all the pieces) it's ridiculous.

I guess it's possible, but I don't think it's likely they hold off an announcement if he's already been extended just so they can announce it with them in Calgary. They didn't do that for Huberdeau, so I don't see any reason to do it now.

I agree. I knew nothing about Weegar before this. But, looking at stats/analytics Weegar is a top pairing Dman, and a lot of writers out there say he is an elite talent. So, I think it’s possible that a Tkachuk for Weegar 1 for 1 trade (disregarding age) would actually not be that far off value-wise.

Heard from a source close to the situation that nothing is imminent. Talks have been consistent but no deal is very close yet, still just talking/negotiating.

Huberdeau replacing Gaudreau is basically a wash, which is incredible - you could argue Huberdeau's size makes him more valuable. Based on what I have read, from an analytics standpoint, Weegar is one of the best Dmen in the entire league - to me that replaces Tkachuk's value, albeit very different skillsets.

With our improved Dcorps we should be incredibly hard to score against under a Sutter system, sure we won't score as much - but we won't be scored on as much either. So with the roster as it is today we're about as good as last year on paper. Which is pretty impressive considering our two best forwards left. Now, if we could sign Kadri I think it really puts us into the contender category:
Goaltending: A
Defense: A+
Forwards: B+
Coaching: A+

Could be a very good year.
I agree with your post overall, but just wanted to comment on a couple things:

First, I don't think Weegar replaces Tkachuk. However, I DO think that Weeger + Schwindt + 1st is, if not fair for Tkachuk, it's at least close enough. And honestly, that is about what I would have expected the trade to be (also including Huberdeau is just insanity)

Second, while I agree with your ratings of everything else, I don't agree with your rating for the forwards. As they stand right now, I would say C+. Add a Kadri, or another top 6 player, and you're at B+

I had a couple of phases before 1.

1. Trade with Florida? What?
2. Probably something involving Lundell.
3. Same wouldn't be coming back would he?
4. Huberdeau? WTF? SO this is a pure win now deal?
5. Wait...there is a 1st too? I hope we aren't sending it
6. Oh they are sending it? Cool
7. Oh no it has conditions. Probably if Huberdeau doesn't sign. That kinda sucks
8. Oh that's not the condition? We get a 1st no matter what?

Of course all that happened in about 10 minutes.

When I saw the trade it was already out in its entirety and my response was simply: that is not possible! (followed by a lot of excited expletives)

I hadn't heard that Friedman refuted the Tarasenko/1st/Scandella source so that's what I was going off of... although with the disparity in quality between the two offers, it doesn't surprise me.
