could have given them more time to try and clear cap. Kadri is still on the market today, yet John's camp felt they had to race to the dotted line on the first day of free agency. Still weird to me.

Not weird to me at all because I don't think JG decided where he ended up, Meredith did.

I wouldnt be surprised if we learn later that his agent fumbled this like an 8-year old at the first day of Football Camp.
I do wonder if his agent thought he had his finger on the pulse of interest and was out to lunch.

What I mean is, if it had been clear close to the end of the season, teams know hes available, and they make adjustments to try and add.
The way he did it here everyone would have been like..."Oh! Gaudreau's available? Was sure he'd sign. Okay, what can we move around here? What? Columbus?!"

I don’t think JG’s wife decided as in “We’re moving to Columbus”. I think she was in on the “we’re moving to the US” bit. I think he got super nervous a half day into UFA and didn’t like the process at all, so he took the first actual offer that came along. I agree he could have waited a bit if he had more nerve.

Johnny wouldn’t admit it publicly but you have to wonder if he could do it all over again if he wouldn’t have taken the $84M offer the Flames tabled on the eve of free agency? He mentioned even debating coming back on a 7 year deal the next day and I do not believe free agency went the way he wanted it to go. Rumors the Devils were in around 10-10.25, islanders the low 9’s, the Flyers not even putting an offer together, and rumors the Gaudreau camp engaged the Jackets to get a deal done.
He won’t admit it publicly but he left money, and legacy on the table to go to a franchise that has never won a division, and only won a playoff round once in their existence and have 6 playoff appearances in their 21 year history

Yes I think Gaudreau's indecision ultimately cost him more than it did the Flames. Once we got past last summer, he was not getting traded. So while I am sure that Murray nd Treliving are rightfully pissed that they were not negotiating with a willing party (as it turns out), the end result doesn't change much.
But if Gaudreau makes it clear at the end of the season that he will pursue free agency, I suspect his offers would have looked a lot better.

I think there's a possibility that stuff like this kind of freaked him out too. Everyone telling him about the legacy he'd leave if he'd stay, what he means to the city, etc... its a lot of pressure. And maybe he just never felt connected enough to it to me comfortable with being Mr. Calgary the way a guy like Jarome was. Maybe shyly collecting his money in below the radar Columbus all of a sudden sounded pretty good.
I do think he'd sign with the Flames if he could go back in time. Personally. But ala, we are here. Signing that dudes sign is funny. Shows he was pretty chapped not to get something from Philly.

All this #### about his wife making the decision is ridiculous. It was likely a joint decision, as is the case in most marriages. The issue I have with it, is there is absolutely zero basis in facts - complete and total guessing, yet it's stated very confidently by some posters.

Signing that sign is meaningless, a fan came up to him with it, he probably laughed and gave the autograph... Or, he was signing a bunch of autographs and didn't realize what he was signing.

I understood a bit being bitter about it all when it was happening, but after a week I was feeling like it was getting pretty pathetic around here. NOW it's been a month and y'all look like dweebs pulling up your ex's insta and obsessing over her most recent posts...
He doesn't play for us anymore. None of us need to care what he's doing or thinking, or what his relationship with his wife is. It really doesn't matter and won't effect any of our lives.

Yeah, I agree. But he probably wouldn't have signed it if there wasn't a small part of him that went "yeah, f*** that guy."
Anyways. Just a little fun.

People should stop with all the wife blaming comments. It's really making the people making those comments look stupid and petty IMO. Just let it go already. He made a decision he felt was best for his family. He was UFA, that was his right and his choice.
