Barzal is at his lowest value of his career, but the ask would still be high because of Lou. I doubt it would cost a top pairing D and a recent #10 who is trending in the right direction.

I could see this be a bigger trade involving players from both sides, if it were to happen.

It's more likely they keep Barzal and Nelson and move one of them to the wing than trade them.

Bailey or Beauvillier are probably traded if Kadri signs there.

I don’t see why the Islanders trade Barzal for anything other than an overpayment. I think he suffered in Trotz defensive style but I could see him thriving in Sutter’s puck possession style.

I don’t even k ow why his name has popped up so much?

Do the Isles need Hanifin though? Their D is not bad.

He has a 10M dollar QO after this upcoming season and may very well pull a Tkachuk and want a fresh start elsewhere. If long term negotiations are not happening or are not going well it's certainly an avenue for the Islanders to explore - especially if they can bring in a replacement in Kadri.

Barzal’s speed would be a huge boost to this team and they could play he and Huberdeau together on a scoring line and then it would make sense to have Lindholm/Mangiapane form a second pair and Backlund/Coleman on the third line.

It would be absolutely nuts to go from Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Hanifin to Huberdeau/Barzal/Weegar in one offseason
Barzal is Barzal, but I'm not sure we need a Barzal enough to give up a 25 year-old top-paring D with over 500 NHL games under his belt AND our most exciting offensive prospect.

Lou has a long and successful career, but really, I think his smarts and toughness have been exaggerated a tad here. What trades has he knocked out of the park in the last, say, 5-10 years? IMO he’s lost more trades than won them lately.

Part of my thought process is trading 2 eastern US born players for a Western Canadian born player.

ActiveStick makes a good point that the Islanders blueline is in pretty good shape so not sure why they would move Barzal for a Dman. Likely would want another forward or more of a futures trade so they can free up room to sign Kadri.

Beauvillier should be movable for cap relief but I can’t see a team taking 32 year old Bailey with 2 years left at $5M each without a significant sweetener being attached because of the multi year commitment

Is this true? A 10M qualifying offer? That’s outrageous!

Kylington has too small of a cap hit to get anything significant back and Valimaki likely hits the waiver wire. If the team wants a top line or top 6 forward they likely need someone in their top 4 to move out.

In a vacuum, yes. We're not in a vacuum though, therefore you have to ask "how does creating a new hole on defence to add another center address our current hole at RW?"

This is probably my favourite thing about Tree. He doesn't seem to believe in creating new holes to fill current holes. It's kinda like that wise man FanIn80 once said... "if you have a hole in the ground, is digging a new hole right beside it the best way to fill it in?" Even worse, "if you have a hole in the ground, do you really want to dig a brand new hole right beside it, just to end up with two holes and a surplus pile of dirt that can't be used to fill either of them?"

May be unpopular but maybe next offseason you re-up Hanifin and trade tanev.

I love the guy buy I like the though of a reasonable 7 year extension for hanifin next off season.

Apparently teams will be lining up to give us a #2C for Dube and Valimaki.

The depth of the flames D will be a massive advantage for them this year over 31 teams. The transition game as well as the D activation is going to be relentless. It's going to open up room for forwards and the young guys will benefit the most.

It's a group that can be a threat on the attack while also being rock solid defending. They will be the backbone and good teams are going to be very frustrated that we are throwing pair after pair of really good d men. Keep it as is please.

Win or lose a trade is irrelevant at the end of the day. His teams have gone deep in the playoffs a few times even recently. Dude knows how to build a team.
