People say this extends the window but I think they need to replace at least half of tkachuk's production up front before we can say that.

Reel in a 50 point-capable top six forward through trade and I feel like we're back on even footing with a different make up going into next season.

Not an easy task but they have trade chips here to work with.

On twitter, it's funny seeing how fast Oiler fans have pivoted from "Haha who cares, he'll leave in a year for nothing, it's Johnny all over again" to "Terrible contract, they're handcuffed now" LOL

This is not Treliving deciding to move on from Tkachuk.
This was Treliving having to react to Tkachuk telling him, and everyone else in the league that HE WAS NOT GOING TO STAY IN CALGARY.

lol

That Treliving took that BS situation and turned it into:

1. An top line winger and top 10 league wide scorer, now committed to CGY for 9 years
2. A top pairing defenseman from the Presidents trophy winning team last season
3. A pretty decenbt prospect
4. A future 1st round pick

Is nothing short of a goddamned miracle.

Blows me away that there are some Flames fans in here wringing their hands over this.

LMAO
Out of thanks, but seriously, thank you for this, so many posters seem to have lost the full magnitude of this deal and how/why it came into being.

Well, TBH, they do know what handcuffing contracts look like. They are speaking with an experienced voice.

If there's a team that knows a thing or two about terrible contracts, it's the Oilers.

Stop comparing Tkachuk to Huberdeau, but Gaudreau to Huberdeau and things become more clear.
Plus everyone leaves Weegar out of the equation.

The Oilers have $5mil in wasted cap space. They claim you can just buyout bad contracts whenever no big deal. Not sure they should be commenting on cap management of the Flames. We didn’t go over the cap last year and have no retained salary buy out problems

I’d love it if the Oilers bought out Foegele to sign McLeod. His contract was backloaded so the buyout actually is a pretty bad idea

Habs & Oiler fans swarming that Byron Bader tweet about how elite playmakers age to whine and argue with him. Oiler fans are expected but the Habs ones are so transparently bitter they couldn't sign him

Huberdeau felt the love. His comments and presence make Calgary a preferred destination again on the trade and free agent market.

We can trade him to them for an unprotected 1st and an A prospect in five years.

Gaudreau not signing in Philly/New Jersey, Huberdeau not signing in Montreal, Tkachuk not signing in St. Louis.

Bill Armstrong right now waiting for Matthews to come home:

I'm a big fan of Treliving and have been for a long time. He won this trade.

He's built a good team and when Monahan and Lucic roll off the books next year and are replaced with another star forward, the team should be a Stanley Cup favorite. Within this context, the Huberdeau signing makes sense. It gives the Flames a 2-4 year contention window to win now. For at least the 2023-24 season, the flames have no bad contracts while many players provides value at or above their cap-hit (including Huberdeau). This probably continues for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 season.

That said, outside of the above context, this signing is an overpayment. The UFA market this year implies that $10.5 million x 8-years is expensive by around $1m-$2m per year relative to market value. And towards the back-half of the contract, this signing will look increasingly worse. The silver-lining is that the flames will have likely entered a rebuilding phase by this time, which means a few overpaid players and bad contracts won't matter.

Tkachuk was just awesome. He could have limited it to one team. He could have said nothing and played for time.

Instead, he gave Tre a list and Tre was able to make an incredible trade for the Flames.

Yup.

We're basically looking to make up a 60 point difference in scoring on the roster now. Hence the one forward piece.

And that’s just total points. I don’t believe that Tkachuk coming out = 100 less points. Someone is going to play on the line

Right on the money. Huberdeau is a Gaudreau replacement, dollar-for-dollar offered. Tkachuk's departure is the unknown. What replaces him? That's why this deal is incomplete and there has to be more to it. For almost the entire tie Treliving has been running the show this team has been a top six forward short from having a complete lineup. Well, we're right back there again. We need another top six forward to replace what departed with the loss of Gaudreau and Tkachuk. So while people are slapping each other on the back congratulating each other for the amazing work done to date, this team is short one first line RW from having a similar team to last season. Until that is filled the Flames have a gaping hole that will impact the success of the team.

This is true. It's a flawed approach in a lot of ways, but I like us being safe than sorry and retaining the same number of top 6 caliber scorers we boasted last season.

Someone will see their production rise playing up the line up though, no question about that.
