I love that the best argument against the contract is
"its not like he's so and so" (names 5 players that Huberdeau outscored last season)

If you ever want star players in Calgary you have to pay, heck its probably only a 1M more than a top market would have to pay anyway.

Again the Flames just won the division with Lucic/Monahan over 12M, it will be okay

this whole "6 years tops" is just nonsense, he was NEVER going to sign that...guy would be the top UFA on the market next season

It might be "bad" in 7 years...pretty likely we have a worse contract on the book RIGHT NOW and yet we survive

Whether or not we call TBR a successful team, or agree that they followed the “don’t sign stars” strategy, you can never compare baseball team building to hockey anyway. No cap, huge rosters, multiple different FA rules, etc etc.

What?

I could not take another finals loss.

So, first of all, I don't agree with that. The last city that had this stigma of being "the team that can't get its stars to stay" was Columbus, and that seems to have gone away. But more importantly than that, we know exactly what it would take to change the image of the team in terms of its ability to attract talent: new facilities. The facilities suck. Calgary isn't Winnipeg, it's not Buffalo, it's not Arizona. It's not Vancouver or Toronto either, as far as that goes, but I think the pendulum of "no one wants to come here" has swung a little bit towards the doom and gloom. If Huberdeau walked next summer but at the same time they broke ground on the new home for the Flames, I don't even think it would make an impact.

It would, however, be devastating to Treliving. That would be the end of him, for sure... and I don't think having a GM fighting for his job is a good place to be in the NHL.

I get the sentiment that, well, the Flames will be bad for the last 4 years of his deal anyway, so who cares. My counterpoint is, first of all, no one can really predict where any team in the NHL will be in 4 years, and second, if the plan is to suffer through 4 years of darkness and pain, that's... I just don't think that's a good thing to be ready to accept. I don't EVER want to be the current San Jose Sharks.

Whelp. Clearly, I was wrong about Huberdeau not wanting to sign without actually playing any games here first....

Beat the price in what way? Huberdeau had more than twice the points than Bjorkstrand last season and he’s signed for less than double the price. I think ‘not the same tier’ undersells just how non-comparable the players are.

The Rays did sign Wander Franco to 223 million so they are not cheap all the time.

Flames paid over 12M to Monahan/Lucic last season and won the division in a landslide

10.5M with a 120+M cap won't be that big of a deal, I suspect the guy can still play. Also, if you are never willing to pay a star just fold the franchise.

I do know comparing a rebuild in hockey to baseball is downright silly.
Hundreds of prospects all over the world to choose from. 20+ rounds of drafts, much larger pool to choose from to get cheaper, and sometimes superstar players for nothing.
Tampa u chose as the one team that sure does it well.
Ever hear of the pirates, marlins, orioles, reds doing anything close in the last couple decades.
Again tho, the Flames have had equivalent success in the last few years doing nothing like what u propose.
Shake those fists at the clouds dang nabbit!

So then we disagree? I think?

I'm not talking about the Yankees or the entire NL West here. I'm talking about how Tampa is going about it. They very much have a cap and have been successful despite not participating in the arms race that is MLB.

Matthew Tkachuk (signed 8x9.5) for Huberdeau (signed 8x10.5), Weegar, 1st round pick + top 10 prospect in our organization.

That looks like an absolute fleecing and I expect Weegar to be done soon too.

I'm saying that in terms of what puts the team in the best position to win the most games in the future, I would rather have Bjorkstrand signed to his deal, less the picks required to acquire him and plus whatever the return would be for Huberdeau either now or at the trade deadline, plus 5.1 million in cap space until 2027-2028 to allocate to other areas of the lineup (it would cover most of Weegar, for example) instead of Huberdeau signed to this deal. Basically, that seems like a much more effective allocation of cap space to me.

Two rounds in what? 6 years? Random COVID round doesn't count BTW.

I concur.

yep, and the Flames don't have the option of paying what Florida or Vegas pays anyway...market is the market

You can buy the exact same house on the same amount of land in two different cities and the price will be different

"Not in a league with guys like Mackinnon"

Last 4 seasons:

MacKinnon: 345P 264GP
Huberdeau: 346P 286GP

Yeah.. an ocean of difference between them.

Same money we would have to pay Johnny or Tkachuk to keep them

Huberdeau is just as good as the other 2

He should be good for at least 5 yrs

Who gives a #### after that considering we need to keep him

Tell u what since we are talking about a hockey signing, and a hockey organization, why dont u give me a recent example of a hockey organization with all types of recent success doing it on the cheap.
