Another analyst's take. Good discussion in the comments. Is bad defensively, not great in transition, but good once zone entry is gained.

I don't care what anyone says about Tkachuk and his advanced stats and pest talent. He's balls slow at 24 years old doesn't have a half step to lose. Once it happens (and it will before he's 30) he's going to fall really fast. Good player but it was always going to be a gamble on how effective he would be deep into his career as it can end really fast for guys that can't skate well.

Florida was pretty much all offence with a rookie coach. Look what Sutter just did for Gaudreau. I don’t think its a stretch to think that Huberdeau will have some of his best defensive statistics this upcoming season.

So basically Gaudreau before Sutter?

Look at how sutter transformed johnnys game last year.
He’ll help complete huberdeau’s game this year as well

Defensive play depends heavily on teamwork. It's nearly impossible to isolate one player's defensive contribution not only from his teammates, but from the system his team plays.

I'm quite sure Huberdeau's defensive numbers will improve playing for Sutter, at least to the point where he's not an outright liability.

That will change under Sutter and his system.

Are we seriously saying Huberdeau is heading into his "twilight"? Good grief.

once upon a time, Johnny wasn't considered very good defensively either..."too small, didn't play hard on the defensive side"... he got better under Sutter because the system they played helped him to be better.

As for Tkachuk - love the kid, but he wasn't going to sign here - so saying Calgary "lost him" is a stretch.

Calgary's hand was forced, but they managed to get a guy, statistically, who is only 2 months older than Gaudreau for the same deal, who has been a more consistent point getter over his career and certainly over the last 3 years.

Add in another defenseman who can play in your top four, plus a first rounder and a NHL bottom 6 prospect.

All in all, a tidy bit of work before signing Huberdeau...Sign Weegar, and that's an excellent deal made with one hand tied behind your back.

TBQH, who care if you'll eat crow? Let alone someone else has to prepare it for you. You can just go hunt one yourself and eat it raw if anyone cares.

This is very comforting words from someone who has watched him alot.

Hubi key to Bennett's 4 mill contract and Duclair getting 30 goals in one season doubling his average goal output over career.

Gives me some hope Monahan could end up re-emerging on Huby's line and pot 30 goals himself!

Also, besides locking up Weeger, useful if JH has a player he knows and likes and would be thrilled to join in Calgary as part of the transition. Doesn't sound like he knows or has played with anyone on the Flames in the pros or junior, and time strictly with the Panthers...maybe an ex Panther?

Barkov seems to be a good buddy but don't think Brad can pull that one off.

Agreed. Plus he kills penalties. Sutter will love him.
