Yeah, but we get Huberdeau this year for $5.9 (and only had to pay him $4.2 if his bonus was already paid).

We?
Oh and he outscored everyone on your list last season
Point probably makes more money anyway when you consider taxes

Good. Now go out and sign Kadri, and we're good to go.

I’m sure Johnny is just fine. He’s closer to his dad (who could have died) and family - with his newborn. He gave us his best, gave us so much to cheer for when we had nothing. It wasn’t the best ending to his flames legacy, but I will always be a fan and am glad he went somewhere where I don’t hate the team and can quietly cheer for him on sportsnet highlights.

Love that Huberdeau is signed long-term. A little heavy on the cap hit, but he's one of the best players in the league, so worth it. Weegar is next. Hopefully they get him at a similar term at around $6.5. Both players for $17M would be solid. Was hoping it would have Huberdeau at $9.5 but if they trim a bit off Weegar, then its about the same result. Now the Flames have to move Lucic and bring in another forward with some finish.

I'm still trying to understand why Fla went for this deal, where they traded so much for Tkachuk (I lack basic NHL contractual/cap etc knowledge). Maybe they are betting on Tkachuk as an instant fan favourite and ticket seller.

Ryan Leslie downplaying the eyes emoji. Humble. I love it.
That’s how you keep yourself in the know. Giving Elliotte all the credit for breaking it

Point makes 9.5 in Tampa... Which is at least 10.5 in Calgary.
Huberdeau outscored all these guys

I'm not a huge fan of $10.5M. Wouldn't have been a fan of Gaudreau getting that much either, and I felt pretty okay about the idea of dishing guys at the deadline for picks, but hopefully I'll be proven wrong. At least the Flames do have a legit star and Treliving has succeeded in salvaging a brutal situation. I'm interested to watch him play.

They are convinced/gambling that a player of this potential magnitude (talent, agitator etc) and age comes around once in a long time. For a new GM it's a signature move in his cap too.
And Treliving my guess is scared FLA that there was an offer sheet coming so they had to up the ante to get the Flames to protect FLA from that by electing club arbitration.

Tkachuk is so much younger. They get every year of his prime, that has to be a huge factor for them.
And they have had great regular season success but nothing in the playoffs so they’re definitely looking to change things up.

Those guys might have more.combined playoff games than Hubedeau has regular season also. Huberdeau is a good player but he's not a superstar.

I am glad that it was 10.5x8. It was kind of the obvious contract given that this was the offer for Gaudreau, and Huberdeau essentially replaces him in the lineup (and tied him in points last season), and they are even close in age.
I was worried given the circumstances and optics of everything that Huberdeau would have squeezed more. Also, he has just turned 29 - June 4 is his birthday. Of course signing a 29 year old to an 8 year deal is going to result in having a poor value contract near the end of that term, but that's what happens now. You either sign your stars to these deals, or you don't keep them. I mean, perhaps he will still perform up to his deal throughout his entire term, but you likely bet against that. That's ok.
Now the trick is to win a cup. I wonder if Sutter is resting easier tonight or more excited and won't be sleeping trying to figure out his line combos now.
Weegar, Ruzicka, probably a few deals balancing the lineup (too many defencemen), and I guess that's a wrap on the off-season.

Well, he scored more than any of those guys last season. I’d put him actually between Kucherov and Rantanen. MacKinnon and Makar are just different, and When Mackinnon signs his next deal, he will make a lot more than Huberdeau. Makar signed an extension when he was a very very promising RFA.
Rantanen signed a 6 year deal at age 22, for $9.25 AAV at a time when the cap was only barely creeping up. The deal only b ought 2 UFA years. And he made $12M in the first couple years.
