Would 5 years be better for us? Of course, but he's not getting 10.5/year signing a new contract at 35, so why would he?

Treliving went to Montreal for dinner. For dessert, had the hopes and dreams of all the Habs fans who were sure Huberdeau was signing there next year.

This will suck at the tail end, but it’s the deal Calgary had to offer, and it’ll likely be fair for a good chunk of time, probably better than Gaudreau would have. I’ll also be surprised if he’s here for the entire length of the contract, but this is a huge win for a team that needed one. Weegar next please!

The smaller 115 point player that should have had some loyalty turned this deal down not sure how anyone could expect to pay less. Calgary will have to pay 1M or so more for players so why not use it on the top end instead of the bottom.

Probably an unintentional flex, but a flex nevertheless.
It makes sense though. The big money’s committed, now Treliving better knows how much he has left to work with. I bet Weegar signs within a week.

Flames ownership has been getting a lot of flak, and deserved in some instances, but they deserve a lot of credit for this

This is also a first for the flames... 73% of Huberdeau's contract is paid out in signing bonuses

Yeah, because only 7 years. Karlsson was more but he squeaked out a half season with SJ first.

I think it was a fair caveat. Before the extension, it was fair to say that Treliving did the best he could with the cards handed to him. Now that Huberdeau extended, I am comfortable saying the Flames came out on top. Obviously things have to play out on the ice over the next 9 years, but on paper for the next few years, I think this is a 100% a win now.

Maybe we'll start siphoning French talent with this and the promotion of Pelletier.

Anything that makes MTL fans salty puts a smile on my face. They're soo entitled.
