It's probably a fair contract if he can repeat 40 points while being a pest. Typical middle six player who can plug a hole, but not a guy who drives the play.

I don't mind Yamamoto but he played 1200+ mins at even strength and only 256 of those mins McDavid and Leon were not on the ice. He's a $2 mil player getting $3.1 mil due to getting most his ice with 1 or the other.

So they're going into next season with the same forward group, a worse defense especially if they dump Barrie. And their goaltending will be questionable.

I have this expectation that the Oilers are actually going to miss the playoffs next year. And that's not a guess, that's a spoiler.

Smith was horribly inconsistent stopping the puck but he definitely helped their D transition. Without that their D will struggle even more. A guy who is a career backup, suddenly becomes a starter for a team and then is not back after a year. Should be fun to watch the implosion, I am sure Kane won’t be a distraction through it at all.

The only worries I have on them missing the playoff is they get a chance to get their hand on Bedard.

Smith had a better save % than Cambell in TO

Kylington pt/gp/$million AAV: 0.17
Yamamoto pt/gp/$million AAV 0.16

... and Kylington is a defenceman.

This is pretty funny because you have to think his entire angle was, "look, I have to get paid more than Puljujarvi... you guys HATE that dude and he still makes 3 million, I'm not taking a penny less than 3.1."

Every once in a while I log into facebook, and on my feed was a Yamamoto article from the Edmonton Sun. The first comment was this :

Quote:
I’m a Die hard Flames fan and was hoping Edmonton dropped the ball here. This kid is worth this contract! As a FLAMES FAN, I can see that this Dude has got more guts than a butchers killing room floor and plays 10 times his size with major offensive upside. May seem a little high, but this kid has proven that he plays for this team. Embrace this signing, cause there’s 31 other teams that would happily sign him.
It's fine to get hyped about your own players, but unless this was Yamamoto's mom, I don't think that this was a Flames fan. Opposing teams talk about Jagr this way, not a middle six player. "I am the bestest CALGAREE FLAMES FAN ever, but this guy..." I don't get the pretending to be another fanbase kind of troll. It's very weird to me.

If Mcload gets $1 mil that puts them 700k over the cap with 12 F 7 D and 2G. This is assuming Smith and Klefbom go on LTIR

Options

Send Broberg down and get 100k under the cap (assuming Mcleod doesn't get more than a mil). Slater Koekkoek would be an every day dman. Keith out for him is a is a huge downgrade for them IMO. Also they would be a mess roster wise only having 20 guys up. Someone gets hurt they would have to go on IR

Trade Foegele? His numbers in his role are ok so maybe someone takes him but he's basically an ok 4th liner making nearly $3 mil. My guess it takes a pick to get rid of him. Buyout is an option but his contract was actually backloaded. The biggest cap savings is this year and then it gets worse each year.

Trade Barrie? They might be able to get a 2nd for him but then they lose Barrie. Bouchard is an RFA and no Barrie equals massive contract for Bouchard next summer. They currently have 12 guys signed and $17.5 mil space (Barrie removed) with Skinner, Puljujarvi, probably McLeod and Bouchard as RFAs. If they set up for Bouchard to get $7 mil or more they will be in worse shape next summer. Cap goes up a mil they will have $18.5 mil but if Bouchard goes on that top PP unit I could see 60+ points. He will look at Nurse contract and think why should I take less than $9 mil

The Ken Holland cap management is starting to take full form here. They have 896k in cap overages from last year as well. It's safe to assume that will happen again this year

One of the biggest problems they are going to have is that with so many other teams having cap problems, the possible trade destinations for cap dumps know that they are one of only a handful of dance partners and can leverage it to get the most out of the deal. The Keith deal sure was funny from a cap hit cost, but like many others have pointed out, he was hands down their best D man. That defensive core looks like a sieve and it's hard to have much belief that Campbell is going to step up and repeat the best start of a season he has ever had, for a whole season, with many more high danger chances against.

You can only move up 10 spots now, unless McDavid and Draisaitl go down, I can't see them placing in the bottom 10. If they miss the playoffs it won't be by much.

If anything the person that made the comment invalidated their claim to be a "Die hard Flames fan". No die hard Flames fan would be gushing about one of their middling forwards or anything Oilers related in general. Either the person is a relative of the player or an Oilers fan creating more propaganda for the kool-aid guzzling fans.
