I'm not surprised it's only 3 years, Mangiapane has always bet on himself. He clearly thinks there's another level he can reach, and is probably aiming for 40-45 goals this year like his agent said

Would like to see him on his off-wing with Huberdeau and Lindholm. He's made some nice plays on his off-wing from what I've seen

I like this, a lot can change in 3 years. The cap will have gone up quite a bit by then so extending him shouldn’t be a problem….assuming there is mutual interest. If things aren’t working out gives either player or team an out. Another low risk signing.

I think these signings today are great. They reduce risk, keeping the term short for 2 players that we really can't be sure what they are; and they keep the cap hits under control.

Not sure what people were expecting term wise.

The only way Mang would be signing a long term deal would be at max value. $8M x 8 years. He’d be wanting to maximize on this being his last real deal.

Now he gets to free agency with an opportunity to sign a 7-8 year deal at age 29. Perfect contract management from Mang’s camp.

The asset managers won't like it, but by going with shorter term + lower AAV for Kylington and Mangiapane, Treliving has gotten himself the cap room for a big trade deadline addition.

For those concerned that the Flames only have 3 guys signed for more then 3 years, if they get Huberdeau and Weegar signed, that'll make 5. And I doubt many teams have much more than that.

Mangi also has a game where I’m not sure how it ages into his 30s. Definitely skilled, but he’s an all effort guy, is undersized, falls about 15 times every game, that all adds up in your 30s (speaking from experience).

Between this and Kylington, this is some tidy business from Tre if you ask me.

Once the players have made good the HRR shortfall, the cap should increase significantly, either in 2024 or 2025. It could be between $95 and $100 million by then. Even if his production declines over the term of this deal, he can likely get a similar number on his next deal under a much-higher cap. If his production improves or stays the same, he should be due for a big raise.

People understand that a 5+ year deal for Mangiapane would come in @ around $7.0 m, right? I don't know how comfortable I am with this player at that number.

I'm fine with this, but to me the real mistake was not signing him to a long term deal two years ago. The underlying metrics were there but he hadn't broken out yet on counting stats. Lots of people, including Kent Wilson were pushing to lock him in for a long time for cheap. Something like Josi's previous contract like 7x$4M. It would have become a steal of a contract like Lindholm's and also not a back breaker if he didn't fully pan out.

Example: Florida only has 3 signed for more than 3 years (and one of them they wish they didn’t - Bob). Avs have 6 but Mackinnon ain’t one and neither is Rantanen.

Mangi is betting on himself for one more big payday. If he can hit 40-45 goals consistently the next 3 years he can probably command 6 x $10m+ on his next contract...

Yes, by then Backlund, Toffoli and Tanev will either be off the books or on lower retirement contracts as well.

I think the contract is perfect. I don't see him as a $5.8 million player at 30 years old as the Flames will have had his prime years and after that another team can overpay for diminishing returns. He's a good player but not good enough to lock up long term for big money.

I like the contracts. Neither really absurd cap hits (though I may have thought this a bit high if not for those touting it will start at least 6). Both players having (up until now) career years during contract years while everything was going well for the Flames (until playoffs) could have been super risky. I’d rather they get another season or two under their belts before committing. Especially Mangiapane if they are going to pay him as. 35+ goal scorer, I’d like to see him replicate it before.

Also this still gives them the flexibility of rebuilding in two or three years if Huberdeau and Weegar don’t sign.
