I’ll see your “would of” and raise you a “then” when used as a comparison. There’s nothing worse THAN that!

As of right now, the Flames have the following players signed for 3 years or more:Markstrom
 Coleman
 Anderson
 Mangiapane

It feels like 2024/25 the Flames are planning to be an expansion team, but without the benefit of taking a player from each team. Would be interested to know the long term strategy here…

If huberdeau signs , then I would think lindholm will re-sign when the time comes.

Last kick at the can with this core. I don't hate it.

Probably pretty good guess that a)Sutter is retired and maybe b)Treliving is done, leaving a blank slate for his successor.

Certainly A), but if Treliving is still here he has a clean sheet to do a full on rebuild maybe around Lindholm, Huberdeau, Weeger and maybe some others.

As for Kylington, he plays on a weird edge skating wise and decision making wise. It worked out early in the year but can go wrong quickly.Like Gudbranson and Zadorov, he has benefitted immensely from Sutter putting him in the right situations to succeed. That will continue for 2y and pump his value up as a result.

Can he pick up enough from Sutter and develop on his own the next two years to warrant a big pay day? That's for the next team to probably find out.

It seems to me that the long term strategy is to keep multiple options on the table. Given the roster makeup and the timeline, this is a smart move.

I don’t know #### about gambling but a parley of 1) Kylington leaving after this contract AND 2) he puts up great numbers/60 over the contract would be a nice bet

I mean, it's a 2 year window. It's not really a crazy or unheard of thing.

If the Flames can re-sign Weegar and Huberdeau long term then the team will have some pretty important pieces locked up for 3+ years.

Feels like the year they steal Draisaitl from the Oilers.

This is a very excellent deal by Tre. Once again he proves to be exceptional at this part of GMing.

If OK plays well enough this year you can [possibly] extend him next summer...and signing a year in advance typically keeps the AAV in check a little bit more unless your name is Darnell.

I have no problem with this deal, but calling it excellent is a bit much. This is right where most would have pegged the deal.

He traded long term for cap relief

Maybe he doesn’t believe in Kylington

It’s a gamble
