It's dumb when people say stuff like this in view of how little we actually know about what is transpiring behind closed doors. There are certainly perfectly legitimate reasons for why Lucic may be moved during training camp, or early in the season which are not currently applicable.

Nothing against Hanifin at all. He could probably get a haul for the team in a trade.

Agree on the top 6 forward part, but too many defenseman?

Hanifin - Andersson
Weegar - Tanev
Kylington - Zadorov

Why is that too many? We don’t even know where Weegar slots in yet or who he is going to have chemistry with. Depth on defense is so important- you saw what happened after Tanev went down in the playoffs. Everybody had to fill in by committee and they weren’t able to perform.

Surely we don’t want to bank on Meloche, Mackey, or Valimaki being 82 game players this year right? The above top 6 not only provides excellent depth, but also gives Sutter a ton of options.

Most teams have at least one d-man on an entry-level contract for cap and development purposes. Icing 6 veteran second-pairing defencemen is a nice luxury, but it means you likely have weaknesses elsewhere in your lineup, and you aren’t developing d-men from your system.

Kevin Rooney is here to fill a specific role.

He is a PIA to play against, sticks up for teammates when called upon, is a beast of a PK'er, and is a solid team 1st guy and good in the room.

No he will not be looked to for offense, but offense was not an issue for this team.

Instead he really solidifies the team defense approach Darryl Sutter preaches, which is where all the success truly comes from.

Just the minutes he can eat up killing penalties will help both Backlund and Lindholm spend more time at ES and on the PP.

He may be a bit high on the AAV, but its hardly an issue.

I don’t believe either of those points are an issue for the up coming season. The goal of the NHL club isn’t to develop players, especially with where the Flames stand today. They are clearly trying to win. It’s not like anyone is busting down the door anyways. Valimaki has been regressing significantly and isn’t even on an ELC.

With the departure of Gaudreau and Tkachuk cap space isn’t much of issue this season either.

If they were to sign Kadri or someone Lucic or Monahan can be moved to create space.

There are plenty of ways to improve the forward group without trading a top pairing 25 year old defenseman on a great contract.

Maybe I am dumb but I imagine Lucic already knows if the club has plans to move him. It doesn't seem very likely a veteran like Lucic gets moved during training camp. NTC for starters plus that's not really how this club treats it's leaders. If he shows up here for camp, I expect he will be here for at least until near the deadline.
