The real winners here are the Flames. Even if we got nothing for Tkachuk would have been better than him here at 8 years X$9.5mil/per.

So only one year difference with a cheaper age 29 year for Huberdeau. We can have him for 9 years and he'll only be one year older than Gaudreau at the end of it. If rebuild isn't the goal, pay the man.
|
Agreed.
Need to stop getting hung up on 8 year. As we get closer to that year contracts for highly skilled players of his age will likely be the AAV as the cap goes up.
Either the Flames want JH and pay him or else he goes elsewhere.
If I were Walsh. Contract would need to be 8 x $10.5M. if we are lucky AAV ends up 8 x $9.999M 😎

That’s fine and that’s what I said. It’s 1 year if they didn’t trade him
But because of competition and because Tkachuk agreed to sign 8 yrs, they actually received full value for him.

Both JG, and MT will regress this year, possibly not rebound to 100 point seasons again.
While Huberdeau will (IMO) still be in the 90-110 point range, and make every player around him better.
Flames won the trade, Just hope they can re sign both players.

And I guess to be somewhat contrarian, I don’t know if the organization sees the last year of Gaudreau as such an utter disaster. It was the most successful season of the last 18 years and a big reason why is that you had two superstars playing for their next contract.
|
At this point I find it hard to see Gaudreau's departure as a disaster...this season probably improved Tkachuk's trade value immensely.
Of course it's impossible to know what would have happened if Gaudreau was moved earlier, but I see it as:
nothing (JG) + short playoff run + this huge trade return
vs.
underwhelming JG return + ??? playoff run + lesser Tkachuk trade return* (or no trade at all and the org goes another direction, which likely means patchwork solutions)
Which isn't to say they should do it again. But I'd be okay starting the season with 1 of them unsigned (if there aren't great trade offers). 2 months into the season teams will know where they stand and probably be more willing to pony up for a rental if the available player fits a need. But I'd have a hard deadline of US thanksgiving to ink or deal.

For people who haven't watched these two guys:
Weegar fun fact:
He is a really good deker and often dekes the first forechecker to oblivion when skating up the ice.
Weegar not so fun fact:
He sometimes thinks he's Bobby Orr and goes too far with it which leads to a bad turnover.
Huberdeau fun fact:
He is really good at protecting the puck and surprisingly strong, probably learned it from Jagr.
Huberdeau not so fun fact:
Will usually go MIA for about a month every year (last year being the exception), usually at the beginning of the year.

Well that is better than Backlund who usually takes about the first 3 months off.

I'll bet that doesn't happen if he is playing for a contract.

What Could Calgary get for Huberdeau? I get that he's going to play this year but what are the true options?

Yeah. Although with Huberdeau it's more frustrating because he doesn't bring anything else to the table if he's not creating offense. It's a minor issue but frustrating because when he goes MIA he doesn't #### around lol.

Better than taking the last month of the season off like Tkachuk.

Yeah I agree, if he doesn't have a contract when the season starts you will get the best version of him.

Hahaha. Truth. Bring the beast out of him and get him after McDavid every second game. His ####### edge is what he was missing for the first years

Agreed. Backs was great in the playoffs. If only he could start that way we wouldn't be discussing finding a true #2 C.

I would guess the standard good young roster player, prospect, 1st rounder.

Its Treliving, so probably a sign and trade for 1 year of an unsigned MacKinnon, Compher, a lottery protected first and a middle prospect

He's going the paper clip route and will trade up towards a brand new arena.
