That video was cool background into these sorts of things, but also infuriating. I actually can't believe I made it through the whole thing without closing it in anger at some point haha

Lol, that video just makes the whole signing even more cringe. Johnny, you didn’t HAVE to sign on July 13th. Just ridiculous all around. Wish him the best, but as others have already mentioned multiple times, the wife is most certainly driving the bus.

The fact that Columbus management didn’t even think of landing Johnny and then Johnny’s agent calling them to make a deal is just icing on the cake of how ***ty this whole thing was for us.

Why don't any perennial all stars ever fall out of the sky and into our laps?

At least it wasn't the Rangers I guess.

Still horse#### to lose a homegrown star who had a chance to maybe be the all time greatest Flame, just because of geography.
To be fair I was making sure I wasn’t having a drunk hallucination at the pub when I got the text that the flames got huberdeau

Yeah, but Huby didn't phone the Flames up on free agency day and say "hey, I wanna sign with you guys"

Treliving had to give up a pretty awesome young player to get Huberdeau.

False.

False. CBJ made the first pitch...they just didn't expect to hear back.

Two things stood out from the clip:

Columbus needed ownership approval of the signing - Can people on cp give up the "Flames owners are involved and no other franchise has owners involved" bs

Management asking Johnny if he can come to Columbus the next day - Let me check with my wife first. Yup, she is definitely calling the shots (not that it's a bad thing).

Yeah and didn't they day that they had to wait for the owner to get off a plane before they could get approval?

Like, the guy can't clear his schedule for one day just in case he has to give approval for a big signing? It's not like UFA day was a sudden surprise lol

He probably thought they wouldn't be able to sign anyone let alone Johnny being handed to them.

I'm just poking fun here but after the last few weeks it certainly looks like the wife played a big role in where he's playing now. I still hope it works out for the Gaudreau's as long as the Jackets don't get in the way of the Flames ever.

The thing in this that looks worst for Johnny to me is the bit about Gudbranson telling his agent that Johnny was dying to play in Columbus. Could be he was so torn because he was both dying to return to the Flames and dying to go to Columbus, but it certainly makes his letter and expression of difficulty in leaving Calgary look less genuine if as soon as free agency opened and the Flames were still pursuing him, his buddy was telling the BJs that he was dying to join their team.

"worse"

Where was it reported that the Flames were still pursuing him? I heard Johnny say that he thought about circling back to the Flames on a 7 year deal, but after the Treliving press conference I thought the bridge was burned (which may be why he was getting desperate).

That doesn't necessarily mean that he felt that way all along - could have been as quick as a single phone call with his buddy, after Philly was out. Then a quick chat with Mrs Hockey, who has family there and really liked the idea, and boom! Going to Columbus, baby!

Can't remember the source, but I thought it had come out from someone credible that the Flames did still put forward a seven-year offer before he signed with Columbus.

It's just a little staged thing. I really, really, really doubt the line of communication was Gaudreau-->Gudbranson-->Nash-->Jarmo.

Steinberg reported it. Kinda doubt Johnny mentions it in the letter if there was asbolutely nothing there. There is FAR more evidence of the 7 yr offer than the ultimatum/reneg story.

I mean, I have been married for 29-years, and I cannot imagine even contemplating a move without total buy-in from my wife, who is great. I am fairly surprised by the number of posters who seem to be gobsmacked that Gaudreau did not just dictate to her where they were going to live for the next seven years.

Why is this even an issue?

Steinberg mentioned the Flames circled back after and even Gaudreau said in one interview he thought of going back on a 7 year deal after turning down the 8 year deal.
